Nvidia drivers, where do they install and what do they modify?

Hey I was just wondering where do the modules go and what config files does it change when I run this... magical program that just does it all, its fine when it works.

I just like knowing what things do and what is being changed...

For the module, look at :
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video

For the others :
locate nvidia
(that will help, you can use it with : | grep -v <exclude word> to filter output)

There is an option you can use that will create the nvidia-installer directory and exit. The readme files inside the directory will probably answer all of your questions. After the installation, there is also documentation installed including a common question/answer section. If I remember correctly, there is a nvidia.ko module installed as well as a glx.o module.

If you boot up from one of multiple kernels, then you need to re-run the installation for each kernel. There is an option you can use so you don't need to actually boot into the other kernels to install their nvidia modules.
