Nvidia and 2.6.1 = NO X

Hi guys!

I have 2 kernels - 2.6.1 and 2.4.(the default Slackware 9.1 kernel)

I have installed Nvidia with the .run-file (from www.sh.nu - a link from www.minion.de) and everything went well. I have'nt passed any extra parameters when I installed Nvidia.

I did edit the XF86Config and then I rebooted, everything is OK until where the X session manager should start. The boot process hangs and it won't continue.

What should I do in the first place? If I have to use the "rescue-CD", what's the steps to walk thru?

Thanks in advance

I just compiled 2.6.1 and installed the 5328 drivers with the 2.6 installer from the site you mentioned. On startx I got a blank screen and had to do a hard reboot (no keyboard). In my XF86Config I had to change

Option "NvAGP" "2"

(which is what worked with my old 2.4.22 kernel) to

Option "NvAGP" "1"

ie I had to start using Nvidia AGP rather than the generic one, I assume because of having the new agpgart compiled into the new kernel. It works about as well as the last one, 3d performance is probably slightly slower than it was before.

Anyway what I would do is to read the readme that comes with the driver (from the nvidia site) and fiddle around with your XF86Config and try to find a working combo for your hardware. If nothing works, change back to the nv driver by editing your XF86Config and uninstalling the nvidia driver (run sh NVIDIA-filename --extract-only to extract the file, cd into it and then ./nvidia-installer --uninstall). If you are using the latest version then you might want to try 4496, a lot of people report that it works better for their set up.

Re the valid block device - check where the floppy is symlinked to. I got the "not a valid block device" thing for my cdrom after switching to 2.6.1, I had to change the /dev/cdrom symlink from /dev/sr0 to /dev/hdd and then it worked.

Did you get X working at all with the new kernel, ie. did you try it with the nv driver before you installed the nvidia one? If you don't get any X at all then it might be a kernel problem.

First I changed to 2.6.1 ... no problem at all.

Boot, GUI (KDE), Peripherals, Internet - you name it ... all was 100% OK.

From there I installed the Nvidia drivers (latest version) and during this process, and right after ... no problem what so ever.

When I reboot after installation of Nvidia drivers, it all stop booting at the X session init.

BTW, I don't have a clue regarding symbolic links ... sorry, I would need a little guidance on that topic
