Sorry I was exhausted when I wrote that first post. So let me clear things up a bit.
I was trying to get hardware acceleration to work in Slackware 10.2. To accomplish this I downloaded the official NVIDIA driver from nvidia.com. After the installation of the driver was complete and X was "properly configured" x would not start. I did as X suggested and took a look at the Xorg.0.log file and saw the following errors:
Code:

If you get these errors the solution is fairly simple, I just needed to fully understand the problem. The default settings of the NVIDIA driver use EDID to get information about the monitor. Included in that information is the HSYNC and VSYNC settings of your monitor. The problem being... my monitor was not recognized by EDID and was unable to retrieve those settings. If you have this problem you simply need to add the line 'Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"' to your Device section of your xorg.con. An example would be:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA 6800gt"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"
EndSection
Note: You will need to manually enter the HSYNC and VERTREFRESH settings manually.
I don't usually make it a habit of posting questions like these on forums because the answer is usually something simple. As I feared shortly after I joined and posted I found the answer in the nvidia driver documentation (buried way in there). I posted back because I noticed there are several un-answered posts out there (not on this forum) by people who were having the same issue. Hopefully this post won't be deleted and someone will find it useful.
