Nvidia 173.14.12 + Slackware-current

I am trying to load the Nvidia 173.14.12 driver on a vanilla slackware-current build and I am having no luck...

Anyone get this to work yet? Suggestions?

"ERROR:Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module."

Works fine on the 12.1 generic-smp kernel. But not not the -current generic-smp kernel. I am assuming the driver needs to be patched for the new 2.6.27.7-smp kernel in -current?

But I can't seem to find any patches for it so far.

Maybe you should try the 177.80 driver. It's the first in a long line of Nvidia blobs I haven't had complaints about and it definitely supports 2.6.27.

I stayed with the 169.12 package for quite a while because I had similar issues every time I tried to compile subsequent releases. I compiled the 177.80 package for both 12.1 (2.6.24.5 kernel) and Current (2.6.27.7 kernel) with no trouble. I now am using the 177.80 release. I used the same basic build script with each attempt, but who knows, the problem could have been between the keyboard and chair.

Try the 177.80 release.

I tried the 177 driver but had no success...

The card is a GE-Force FX5200 and is not supported by that driver.

It needs the 173 driver.

I used the 173.14.12 Driver & the patch from Slackbuilds.

I didn't see the patch on there when I looked, but I see now it is hidden in the Kernel Drivers build section.

Thanks for the help!

Same problem with the same graphic card and kernel 2.6.27.8 (on Slack 12.1).
Fixed with this
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...14.15-pkg1.run
The download is very slow...
It is a beta release, but it works fine for me.
Hope this helps

Like Woodsman and lurko, I recommend 177.80. I'm using it with a 2.6.27.5 kernel and it's causing no problems at all.

I mentioned above that my card doesnt support the 177 driver so continually recommending the wrong driver regardless if it compiles with the newer kernel is not the solution to my problem..

But I do appreciate the responses & attempts to resolve my issue.

The patch and the correct driver worked for me.

On my never ending sadistic quest to find ways to break my system when it is working exactly as it should...

I tried the 173.14.15 beta driver w/no patch and it is working flawlessly.

Also on a side note my poor Pathetic Nvidia Ge-Force FX5200 128mb managed to bump up from 2200fps to 2600fps with the newer driver with a quick test with glxgears.

Thanks urka58 for the info.
