nvclock from slackbuilds lock computer?
i download nvclock from slackbuilds, build, and install.
slackware64 14.1, alien multilibs, nvidia GT630 rev 2 ( gk208), and nvidia 331.38 driver xfce.
try to run nvclock_gtk from root in terminal session - it says "(nvclock_gtk:1371): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0"
ok. try the same from user - it says "Segmentation fault"
too ok - i know, there is cli client
but when i do
nvclock -s
( get speed info) from root terminal - my computer completely lock up - even network connection. i press reset, and boot again.
then try
nvclock -i
(info) - and get exactly the same outcome - completely lockup. again "reset". not want experimenting that way further, because afraid, i can got problems with my filesystems / raid1 in that way. anyone have an ideas, or experience with nvclock novadays?

if you not change voltage, and cards temperature is in good range, there is no real danger, imho. 10 - 15 percent overclock novadays is normal thing, i suppose. sadly, but nvidia on linux drivers is locked overclock feature ( in past you can write option coolbits = 1 in xorg.conf, and can overclock memory and gpu from nvidia-settings apps. now that is disabled, sadly. from win you can overclock your cards, from linux - not.

If really you're a hard gamer, better buy a GTX690. Here (Paris, France) you can buy one for (a little) less than 1,000 €, VAT included
More seriously, are you sure that with 10 15 percent overclock you will notice the difference?

affraid, my gamer's days is in past
but i suppose, if my videocard can crunch a bit faster boinc scientific projects with no additional costs from me, it is not a bad thing
and 1000 eur is very high sum for me. there, in 3rd european countries, salary is no better than in nigeria, i think. maybe even worse...

I understand now, c'est pour la bonne cause.
I can't help you at the moment because I don't use the nvidia driver, but I suggest you contact the maintainer of the slackbuid. You'll find his email address in this page.

there is overclocking in the official driver
add
Option "Coolbits" "1"
to "Device" section of xorg.conf
i think nvclock needs it to work also

I maintain nvclock, but haven't actually used it in years. The last update for it was almost 5 years ago so at this point I don't even know if it works for modern video cards.
