no sound with alsa 11 and via82xx

current with default 2.4 kernel
I just upgraded from 1.0.11rc4 to 1.0.11 and sound disappeared with a via82xx chipset. The new patch does not seem to work. Lots of errors about blocked fifo upon KDE exit.

jrd 05-02-2006 07:10 AM

same problem a while back. running

& alsaconf

after install did the trick. hope it does for you.

davidsrsb 05-02-2006 11:28 AM

I run alsaconf, alsamixer and alsactl store every time I touch alsa the alsa driver.
Went back to lib 11rc4, previous driver and the sound is still not working, but the fifo block error is gone.

There have been some problems with via82xx lately.
http://www.slackware.com/changelog/current.php?cpu=i386
Supposed to be fixed now.

davidsrsb 05-02-2006 11:42 PM

From the command prompt as root.
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
result is silence so this is nothing to do with arts.
lsmod shows the vi82xx module loaded

the cat /dev... trick has always worked on this machine in the past.

edit
There are loads of hal.hotplug DEVPATH not set errors in syslog

davidsrsb 05-03-2006 12:53 AM

May 3 13:41:32 tungsten hal.hotplug[210]: DEVPATH is not set (subsystem net)
May 3 13:41:33 tungsten kernel: ALSA ../alsa-kernel/pci/via82xx.c:580: codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000]
May 3 13:41:33 tungsten last message repeated 3 times
May 3 13:41:33 tungsten hal.hotplug[295]: DEVPATH is not set (subsystem usb)
and many more after this

messages now has many complaints about wrong irqs on the usb chips.

davidsrsb 05-15-2006 01:14 AM

Now upgraded to 2.6.16.16 generic kernel with mkinitrd to preload reiserfs and alsa 1.0.11 for 2.6.16.16 package.
A lot fewer errors - the KT400 agp aperture bug and the usb irqs are now OK

Still getting the via82xx.c:580: codec_read: codec 0 is not valid error and DEVPATH errors

davidsrsb 05-17-2006 05:58 AM

DEVPATH lines were due to a hal FRG package, removed that and just the audio driver error

evilDagmar 05-17-2006 08:00 AM

Ouch. The next time I see freerock I'll try to remember to ask if he's upgraded that yet. He doesn't like bugs in his packages any more than anyone else.

davidsrsb 05-17-2006 09:18 PM

The FRG installation is old, never worked properly and unmaintained.
It would be nice to have a method to uninstall these third party Gnome addons and revert to pure Slackware.
