"snd-via82xx-modem" is the device you need to blacklist. Open a terminal, type:
Code:
su
[password]
vi /etc/hotplug/blacklist #<-- use the "tab" key to auto-complete the path name
move the cursor to an empty line, then type (exactly):
Code:
i
snd-via82xx-modem
[ESCAPE]
Q
wq
exit #<--exits from "superuser" (su) mode
Of course you don't have to use "vi", you can use any editor you like; as you have not specified a distribution, vi is the only one which _will_ be there.

Have you tried alsaconf yet?
If you have, which device is being used by default?

Hi all,
I've encountered the same problem discussed in this topic.
Just installed Slack 10.1 on a Toshiba Satellite A40-782 with default 2.4.29 kernel.
All works fine but sound.
I followed the steps mentioned here and googled a lot around ....but no luck till now.
I report hereafter the output from lspci, lsmod and sound information from KDE Control Center, in case someone could help me:

Silly question: Did you press "m" to unmute each audio channel in alsamixer?
edit: everything you did is correct.

Yes I did.
I can post my asound.state in case someone can take a look at it to see if there is something wrong...
I just see that when the system is executing the scripts to boot, one of the last output is something like: alsactl restore values...and I was wondering if it was restoring the previous values and not the ones stored just before reboot...
however this is my asound.state (sorry for the lenght of the post):

Usually, if you can see volumes and adjust them, your sound is working. I'm afraid I don't know what is wrong here.

ok, however thks for your consideration and help!
I'll continue trying to fix this and in case of success I'll post it.
I suppose it's a problem with IRQ....will try to see if it's possible to disable the modem via BIOS....
Also trying cat mp3file.mp3 > /dev/snd the output is device is busy....
I think the system is taking the modem for the sound card even if the relative module has been blacklisted...
If anyone has any other suggestion, please let me know!

Are you using a sound daemon (kde uses arts, gnome uses esd)? If so, kill it, if not, back to the drawing board!!

this is how I've "temp" solved my problem:
removed package alsa-driver
commented out from /etc/hotplug/blacklist all the modules relative to OSS (the old and deprecated one...)....now I've sound.
Just with Kde as wm when I run multimedia application I have an error and the application close (the message says:CPU overloaded), but I don't care cause under Fluxbox, that is the one I use rather than with Xfce, all seems to work fine.
I know this is not the best solution...I think the problem was the system was sharing the same IRQ (11) for sound card and some other device...but unfortunately my skill are not so deep to modify that.
However how one can modify IRQ assigned to devices (I saw command setserial for serial devices, is it right?).
When I'll try 2.6.xx kernel and will try to compile it for my system I will try again ALSA driver.
Thks Tuttle for your help and time (I saw artsd was running, but even after killing it, sound didn't work).

I've got a similar problem (unable to hear sound), can anyone help me?
I've done this:
alsaconf
alsamixer - I've noticed that when I mute and unmute the microphone input, my speakers seem to blip a little. However, my speakers won't reproduce anything I say into the microphone.
alsactl store
As you can see from my printout below, there doesn't seem to be a modem sound device to blacklist. I've tried playing sound with mpg321 in the command line and Noatun in X/KDE. This is VIA KM266 (KT8235) motherboard with integrated C-Media CMI9761A audio codec.

I can't see your cmedia card in the "lspci" output. I think cmipci is the correct kernel module for sound on a cmedia card, however if you look here I don't see your card in the list, so perhaps it isnt supported :~[
