No sound IBM 600E

I have a IBM 600E laptop that i just recently installed slackware 11.0 on. I had tried other distributions however nothing seemed very compatible. I found on linux on laptop website that slackware 10.2 had probed, found , and supported all hard ware on the 600E. So, i decided why not go with the newest version. I did a complete install and everything seems to work fine however when i start KDE a window greets me with can't find /dev/dsp (can't open or something like that) using null device. I went under sound configuration and it is currently set for automatically detect. I tried the other selections with no success. There is a line under that same tab where i coule put in my card settings however i do not know the correct verbage string to do so. So what i am asking is there has got to be a way to make this sound work. I know the IBM 600E has not be presviously supported without much programing knowledge (which i have a little but enough to get me in trouble.) Thats why I am here now. no more trouble.
Thank you
Jason

try vector linux

I've tried serveral distributions on my IBM 600E (PII 266MHZ, 4G, 288M RAM), I was expected: web browser with chinese font support, basic office suite, skype and msn.
below is what I've tried and got:
1. Dam Small
very fast and smooth, detect most of the hardware except sound card
user interface is unacceptable if you will spend much time watch your 14" LCD.
2. MEPIS
installation of Lite is ok, but simplify 6.0 is not ok, no sound
3. ubuntu
xubuntu works without sound
4. pclinuxos
user friendly GUI, no sound, integrated config tools are the best of what I've tried.
5. vector linux
display is good, but lack of GUI config tools.
sound works out of the box, something wrong with the mic, still working on it.
no skype in packages, need download from skype web.

conclusion: most of the distribution can not correctly detect IBM 600E sound card (should be CS4236/35 instead of CS46xx) except vector
