No sound from audio cds??

Hi, I'm running the 2.6 kernel on Slackware 9.1. I'm a little confused about getting my cdrom drive working. It turns out I can mount the cd just fine, and elsewhere, I can play music, etc. etc. just fine (the sound works nicely). However, if I open up the /mnt/cdrom directory with xmms and try to play music from the playlist (which, by the way, shows up), nothing happens. It looks like it's playing (the timer in xmms runs), but there is no sound output whatsoever. Any suggestions? Thanks.

P.S. I can play mp3's from cd's, just not actual audio cd's.

You don't need to mount the audio cd's...
Just put it in and play...
For the "mute" control your mixer...
Cheers

Well, if only it were that simple : )

I read a couple other sites which discussed alsa working with it, and I was surprised to find that I had not, in fact, been using ALSA (I was using OSS instead). So, I adjusted it to ALSA and ran into another issue, which was that as a normal user I was getting permission errors. Quick fix (although probablly not so *correct*) - I'm running xmms with root permissions (via sudo). Also, one other thing, in preferences, I had to configure cd audio player to use the 'digital audio extraction' playmode, as opposed to analog. Seems to run nicely now, thanks for the input.

Rech,

You may want to keep an eye on this thread - http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=128368 - as it seems to be heading in the direction of dsp permissions affecting 'normal' users.

cheers

Jamie...

Hmmm......my permissions for /dev/dsp are already set for 777.....
