have you opened a terminal as root (or su>enter password) and ran "alsamixer" to unmute and set the levels then run "alsactl store" to save them ?

aight - here is what i got. I went to the terminal and this is what went down -

root@logic:~# cat /etc/slackware-version
Slackware 10.0.0
root@logic:~# alsamixer
No mixer elems found

root@logic:~#

I dunno what that means. Maybe my soundcard isnt even recognized or properly configured? If so, how do i fix?

UPDATED -

I ran alsaconf, and it said it configured my soundcard properly, and all i have to do is use a mixing program to adjust the volume accordingly. I went to the Volume Control, turned everything i could up (except for mics), and still no sound. I went to Volume Monitor and it said "Cannot connect to sound daemon. Please run 'esd' at command prompt. This is what i got at the terminal -

root@logic:~# esd
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1155snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem...
If someone knows how to fix it...all answers are welcome.
It could be really stupid because i'm a new linux user. My version is Ubuntu.
Thanks in advance

I'm running Slackware 10.1 on an IBM R40 27233XU and I'm having the exact same issue. I've googled this subject numerous times and this is the only item I've found that even mentions this problem. Any suggestions/solutions will be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my IBM T30...

All I had to do was add "snd-intel8x0m" (without quotes) to my /etc/hotplug/blacklist

You may want to do these from a prompt after wards:

alsaconf
alsamixer
alsactl store <--Stores settings
