No sound: channels unmuted, volume raised, kernel 2.6.7

I just installed the 2.6.7 kernel with alsa support.

Everything loads correctly except I have no sound in xmms nor in any other program.

Here's my configuration:

- Slackware 10 with 2.6.7 kernel
- Via 82cxxx sound card (AC97 codec)
- All channels unmuted
- Using 'Alsa plugin' in xmms

Anyone ever had this problem? (Sound works in 2.4.26)

Try rm /etc/asound.state and run alsamixer after that.

ok nm... the above worked but i also had to run a

#alsaconf and then anther

#alsamixer after removing asound.state

btw i have had this problem on 2 distro's now.... both suse and yoper...

it seems to be endemic to nvidia, 2.6-4 through 7 kernels, the VIA VT8233 southbridge, and the newer alsa drivers........
