no sound as non-root user on slackware64

Hi all,
I have sound as root but no sound when logged in as normal user on slackware 64 ,
I've checked that normal user is in the "audio" group, and I checked there is the permissons on /dev/dsp , /dev/adsp and /dev/mixer.as follow:

ll /dev/dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 2009-12-29 17:46 /dev/dsp

ll /dev/adsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 12 2009-12-29 17:46 /dev/adsp

ll /dev/mixer
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 0 2009-12-29 17:46 /dev/mixer

Can anyone help?

hi

run ...groups....and ensure you are also a member of cdrom and video groups.

2) why not change your permissions to more relaxed chmod...TRY
Code:
su
chmod 755 /dev/dsp (etc)
I use alsamixer and installing alsa-utils should give you that package?

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

When you create a user be sure to include that user in the following groups;

Code:
users floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev
You can use the up arrow after the users selection during the 'adduser' to get the suggested groups. That line can be edited to suit your specific needs.

He is in the audio group and Slackware provides alsa-utils by default, hence he should have alsamixer.
Check alsamixer and see if the levels are adjusted. Maybe re-run alsaconf as root. Then alsamixer and alsactl store.

Just wondering, I didn't have to add my user to the audio group to get sound, so why is this necessary?

ALso onebuck, I don't think adding to the floppy group is really necessary these days :P

Hi! thanks for your reponses firstly!

@aus9: i've tried what you said, but it didn't work, and i have the alsamixer on my slackware, and i'm sure unmuted it. and i am also sure about i'm a member of cdrom and video groups, and plugdev, just didn't work,
any other sugguestions?

@onebuck: i am sure i got the membership of thoese groups: audio video cdrom plugdev, and i tried add myself in users group,it didn't work too ,didn't try to add my normal account into power, netdev, floppy group, some guys mentioned that not neccessary for audio..

I ensure that used the alsamixer as root unmuted . there is not even a volume indicator on the panel , but kmix is running if i run "pgrep kmix".

any more ideas ? pls! i am using the slackware64 13.0 ,btw.

Just an old habit.

Plus, the default recommendation is;

Code:
users floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev

hey,guys!

i solved my sound problem, it's not your information doesn't work, it's just a very stupid mistake that i made, i didn't add the normal user by command "gpasswd" but edited the /etc/group file by vi directly, and used the ':' instead of ',' by mistake, so I was not actually in audio group, but i thought i was, so ... can't believe this mistake took me about a week ...

Just wondering too, I made the same mistake on "video" group, but it always works fine

Thank you anyway ! [i am not very good at english, you know why if you found some stupid mistake in language ]

I'm still curious why I didn't have to add my user to the audio or video group to access my sound card or video card...in which instances is it necessary to do so?
