No sound (ALSA) after install custom Kernel

Hi everyone,

I compiled a new Kernel last night for Slack 9.1 so ACPI would work. Now all ACPI features work, but I have no sound. I worked with it last night and decided to remove alsa packages and reinstall. I had no problem removing or compiling the new ALSA modules. The sound card is started at boot, howerver, when I try to access alsamixer to unmute the system, I get the following error:

ALSA lib control.c:601:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory.

I thank everyone in advance for your help. You guys and gals are great :)

try an alternate mixer, even a gui one (gnome-alsamixer) if need be.

we need a sticky for this.
alsa modules get wiped out if you compile a custom kernel.
uninstall, then reinstall alsa-drivers, or if you want, reinstall all the alsa packages, just to be safe.

I have reinstalled the driver and it is being loaded correctly, but I am unable to run alsamixer so I can unmute the necessary channels. What other packages need to be installed?

I got the issue resolved I guess. I was able to get the ALSA mixer to work after reinstalling the Driver and library files however when I unmuted the it worked but when the computer was restarted the settings didn't save. I ran "alsactl store" but the settings would not save. I decided to back up my data and reinstall. When I reinstalled, I used the bareacpi kernel and now the sound and ACPI work.
