I use Slack 10.0 on a Fujitsu Amilo A ... sound is via8233
I use the kernel 2.4.26, which was installed. When I first compiled 2.6.7 from the sklack cd I had no sound, but I recompiled with a lot more turn on in the sound section; I could not figure out which one was the hit. Now sound works! But several other rpoblems occured... so I wanted to go back to 2.4.26 ...
But in 2.4.26 no ACPI is enabled, so I thought: "Hmm... just recompile the kernel and use the config from /boot and turn on ACPI" .... said - done.
ACPI works!!! yiepie!!!
But hell, no sound! I had this before and I ended by installing the system new.
My guess is, that the old modules are erased while building the kernel again and the modules have been killed.
I can find the needed module snd-via82xx.o in the modules for kernel 2.6.7 but not in 2.4.26 ... and I have gone thruogh the sound - section in the kernel config for a million times now; I can't find any entry for via82xx just for via82c686 and that just doesn't work. In the configuration for kernel 2.6.7 is an entry "VIA 82C686A/B, 8233 SouthBridge" ...but nothing like that in 2.4.26....
I am about to collapse... so.. can somebody please tell me how I can make this module come back? And how the heck was it installed by the installation of the system.. .so it has to be somewhere, doesn't it?
Greetings, Sascha

download the source for [url=http://www.alsa-project.org/]ALSA[url]. Decompress the contents of each package and go into each directory. For your sound card do the following in each directory, while the system is running the new kernel (the one without sound).
I had the packages alsa-drivers nad alsa-lib from the last time I had the prob with 2.6.8.1 .... Installed them like you said (which I did back that time too, but without success)
Now it's working! Even without rebooting or changing alsamixer!!!
Great! Man ... I am so happy...!!!
Now, I've got some question for intrest and learning .. just if you know about this...
You said, that soundsupport must be configured as module ... do you mean the genral SOUNDSUPOORT ... the first line of the sound section or the special device? or what? :-)
What does "--with-sequencer=yes" do in detail? What is it for what would change if I let it out???
I guess I'll have to do this for every similar kernel, eh?
I just can't thank you enough! Thanks, thanks ,thanks!
I don't know what --with-sequencer does, I just use it as it was part of the ALSA setup instructions for my sound card.
I think it is just the ALSA support that must be configured as a module but i cannot be sure so I make all the cound support into modules. When you install ALSA you are overwritting some modules compiled by the kernel. ALSA can only change the modules, not the kernel itself. That's why it has to be configure as modules. I hope that explains it somehow. I'm not an expert though so I could be wrong.
i begin to think, that noone can be a real expert on this section ... it seems to be too hard to get it all .. and it seems like it grew all into each other... but... it works now :-)
