No sound after fresh install of Slackware 14.1 on Acer Aspire 5741
Hello everyone,
I've been trying out different Linux distros and I figured I'd give Slackware a shot. I'm really liking it at the moment however I'm having an issue.
I've looked on the slackware docs ( http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:har..._snd-hda-intel) discussing common problems with the sound and here's what I've tried:
Code:
echo "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" > /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf
Rebooted the system but still no sound. Not sure what else to do since I'm not familiar with Slackware (I come from RedHat Linux).
If anyone knows what I can try or even how to fix the issue, it would be greatly appreciated! As mentioned in the title, I'm using an Acer Aspire 5741 and I know it has a Realtek sound chip.
Thanks,
Simon

You may want to give Realtek's driver a shot if the default ALSA driver isn't working well. Realtek has their own driver based on ALSA they publish on their website http://www.realtek.com.tw in the Downloads section.
Optionally you can also get the SlackBuild for the OpenSound OSSv4 from the www.slackbuilds.org website. This one will take some extra work to get going but I've had great results with OSSv4. There are several kernel compatibility patches available on the OSSv4 forums as well if it won't build for your kernel.
Alternatively, check out AlienBOB's website here http://www.slackware.com/~alien/ and look in the Scripts section for "alsaconf". Save it to your folder, make it executable (chmod +x) and as root run it, and it should try to auto-configure your sound card's profile.

I tried the drivers from Realtek and no luck there. So, I downloaded the SlackBuild and the source and ran the shell script. I then did as was explained in the README.SLACKWARE file. Rebooted the machine and tried running the osstest command. I get an error message saying '/dev/mixer: No such file or directory'. When I try and run AlienBob's script, it just says 'No supported PnP or PCI card found.'
Thanks,
Simon

Have you tried the 'model=acer-aspire' option?

Just out of curiosity, you are member of 'audio' group right? Also, sometimes when I ran 'alsamixer', I have seen some options to be muted (MM) by default.

The audio group is usually one of the default groups on Slackware I think. There's 5 groups set by default to users on Slackware last I recall.

I had just pressed enter when it had suggested the groups, and hence wasnt a member of any other groups than users; a fact that I recently discovered(before this post though)

Thanks for the help and suggestions ReaperX7, allend, aaditya and saivinoba.
Yesterday, I reinstalled Slackware and now the sound seems to function properly. Not really sure what the deal was all along but now, I'm able to play with the volume in the mixer, I can hear the system sounds, YouTube videos, etc. I'm still curious as to what was the issue but I guess it's hard to tell now.
Thanks
Simon
