Have you recently recompiled your kernel?
Was it working before?
If it was, what has changed?
Is this a new install of Slackware? What version?
What is the output of 'lsmod'?
What is the output of 'lspci'?

I see a AC97 codec. Do you have a modem? Do you use it? If not, disable it in BIOS, and try alsaconf (as root) again. I had the same problem w/mine when the modem was enabled during install...alsa thinks it's a soundcard type thing, and drivers are a bugger for it.
If you need the modem, I don't know offhand what I did....
Look at my homepage in my sig...I don't recall if I updated it about the modem
Plus, look at the other link about DRI for X, may save you headaches later.

The modem situation didn't work, so I took the modem out of my computer. It still didn't work.
