I just upgraded my Kernerl to 2.6.6 because I heard that may fix the problem I was having with my sound. Now, the sound works and everything seems to be working as it should, except that my network adapter doesn;t work anymore. This is on a Compaq Armada 7400 using a PCMCIA card.
Before the kernel upgrade, about halfway through the start up scripts the light on the dongle would go on and then when I got to KDE everything online worked. Now, the light doesn't come on and I can;t access the internet at all. I think it is just that I am missing an option somehwere ot turn it on, but I do not know where because when I first installed Slackware it worked on it's own.
Also, is there someway to get the frame buffered console back? I looked through the options on menuconfig before I compiled the kernel, but I didn't see anything and the little picture of tux in the corner was cool :P .
I've never used a laptop with Slackware (it is a laptop right?), but I might give some ideas about what directions to look for starters since you don't have replies yet.
In the menu tree for kernel config, you'll want PCMCIA/Cardbus support at least (perhaps other sub-options in there as well depending on hardware).
In "Network Support" area you will probably look for PCMCIA network device support. Then hopefully your card is listed there.
"Graphics Support" contains option "support for framebuffer devices". Hopefully your graphics device is in the subsequent list of devices.
In "console display driver support" you will see "framebuffer console support", and "logo configuration" seems to have some bootup logo options (I don't use framebuffered consoles or bootup logo so I'm not familiar with exact usage of these options either).
Sorry I'm not much help but thought I'd at least try.
Thank you for your reply. This would mean that I probably have to recompile the kernel to get my network support back, right? I can live without the frame buffered console, but being able to get online is quite important.
You can check output of "dmesg" and see if your network device is found.
From what you said I only imagine that you need recompilation unless you compiled things as modules and just need to load the modules for the network device.
Again...I was really just guessing there based on what I've seen in the kernel config so take it for what it is. You can always try recompilation just to test things out.
Good luck.
Maybe somebody that knows exactly what your problem is will respond to this, but often it's more of a ballistic missile attack that gets but a few nudges from suggestions.
The operator is often the finder of the solution in their circumstance. Without attempt there is neither failure nor success, only the original question.
