no more man page after kernel upgrade

I don't know what happen to my man pages after kernel upgrade.

Code:

root@fire:~# man emacs
Formatting page, please wait...
Error executing formatting or display command.
System command /bin/bzip2 -c -d /usr/man/cat1/emacs.1.bz2 | /usr/bin/less -is exited with status 256.
root@fire:~#

What could be wrong? It just show the output above and that's it no man pages.

Update kernel from 2.6.7 to 2.6.9. Configure the kernel from stracth. patched in hfsplus.

thanks egag.
I upgraded udev package to the one in slackware-current. And it solves the man problem.
