No modules load after compling 2.6.5 and 2.6.6

Hi, I've tried compiling 2.6.5 and 2.6.6 about 12 times over the past two days, however none of the modules will load. They appear to be in /lib/modules/2.6.5 (or 2.6.6 in that case) and are in /rd.d/modules, but will not run, and if I try probemod (modulenamehere) it says that the module is missing. I've followed four seperate 2.6.5/2.6.6 kernel compile tutorials but I have this same result every time
Any ideas? Thanks.

edit: Here is what it says if I try to modprobe a module...
FATAL: Error inserting typhoon (/lib/modules/2.6.5/Kernel/drivers/net/typhoon.ko) : Invalid Module Format

You need to upgrade your module-init-tools package (mine is module-init-tools-3.0-i486-1)
