No microphone output with alsa

I cannot get any output from my microphone (Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop) and cannot figure out why. It is set to record at 100% in aumix but interestingly there is no microphone listed in alsamixer. I have tested with making a sound file using dd then playing it back and all I get is sort of static. I am using alsa on 9.1. I tried two different external mikes and the built-in one - all the same.

1. Isn't your microphone plugin to line-in?

2. You got to push up In-gain to record sound. (Need to experiment a bit for the best level).
