no gedit on Slack 9.1
I just installed Slackware 9.1 and wanted to do some editing. I have no gedit or nano ???? I have clicked on the link on the desktop (Fluxbox) but get no response, and can't get it at a terminal either (as root). I have tried (as root) to "installpkg -r gedit" and got a response "does not end in .tgz", so I tried "installpkg -r gedit.tgz" and still got the same response. Where can I find a list of packages available for Slackware? NOT on their website link, at least. The md5sums were good for the ISO and I burn ISO's at 4x, so I don't think the CD is corrupted. I can't find out if I have a sources list, fstab, or lilo.conf this way. I'm not into Vi, Vim, or Emacs so right now that's out of the question . Thanks for any help you can give me.
AMD Semperon 1800Mhz
512Mb RAM
HP Computer i686
I did RFTM, but it isn't much help in this case, it seems pretty out of date....
Is this computer just too new for Slackware 9.1??

did you create a normal user account?
as the normal user, can u run gedit by typing gedit at a terminal?
can u find the program (if its not installed already) with the pkgtool program?
gedit should be included with slack9.1 by default (unless you specified otherwise).
question--why didnt u install 10.2? not that this would fix your problem, they both have gedit included.
what 'link' did you click on the desktop?

Yes, I created a normal user account.
No, I wasn't able to run gedit by typing gedit in a terminal
no, I didn't find it, however I may not have been using the progran you suggested even tho I thought I was doing just that
I don't remember specifying it NOT to be installed, but I have been known to make mistakes (just ask my wife lol ).
I have now installed 10.2 and was able to find gedit with no problems. This is my first Slackware experience (MUCH different than my Debian derivs experiences), so it will take me some time to get used to doing things a little bit differently. Very nice Distro tho, so far

Welcome to Slackware!
And yes, it is VERY different.
I would advise reading Shilo's sticky "How I Do it All" at the top of this forum.
If you run into more issues, search the forum. Odds are, someone has had it too.
If not, or you need more clarification, just post again.
We'll answer, if we can....
