no ETH0 after kernel tweek
ok, fresh install of 10.2, 2.4 kernel. everything works great, even sound
so I go into the kernel and eliminate things I don't need in there, etc. do all the procedure to install the kernel and whatnot, reboot, no eth0.
I do ifconfig, and all thats there is LO
I do ifconfig eth0 up and it says:
ETH0 - Error while getting interface flags: no such device
I do /sbin/lspci and all my sevices are there, including my NIC which is listed as so:
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Linksys NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11)
I try DHCPCD which had worked once before with a different problem and I get this:
Error, dhcpStart: ioctl SIOGIFHWADDR: No such device
I even went into the kernel and enabled every PCI NIC that was listed in there, and still nothing, and it all worked before the initial kernwl tweek
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

So no modules at all? You made a monolithic kernel?

well the first time after I tweeked the kernel and my net didn't work, I went through and did all the netconfig stuff again, the ifconfig, and the dhcpcd. when none of that worked, I went back to the kernel and made every PCI nic built in, saved, installed, rebooted, still no net, so I made all of the pci net drivers modules, and still nothing. I can't figure out where I went wrong

Did you run make modules, make modules_install and updated lilo when you installed the new kernel?
The module (or built-in code) you need for your card is called tulip. Make sure you also include all generic network stuff (TCP, etc).

Im guessing that you have typed "make modules install" instead of "make modules_install".
Thats what happened to me once

Nope, it typed it correctly
Just to clear doubts, from 2.4.31's README file:
Quote:
- If you configured any of the parts of the kernel as `modules', you
will have to do "make modules" followed by "make modules_install".
Read Documentation/modules.txt for more information. For example,
an explanation of how to use the modules is included there.

Edit: Mmm now that I think on it, maybe that worked for you on a 2.6 kernel, if i've time i'll take a look at 2.6 docs and/or Makefile.

I always do the make modules, make modules_install even if I don't add anything as modules. so the first time I went in and started removing unwanted stuff, I did the make modules and then make modules_install. Can that mess anything up?

I think Linksys uses 'tulip' modules, try recompiling again and make sure to select 'tulip' which is not makerd as default
