No encrypted pages in Firefox?

Here's the situation... Slack 10.2, standard 2.4.31 kernel... firefox 1.0.6... Well, i want to update it to 1.5... go to the site, download it, unpack it, run it... http://gmail.com .... well? ... still nothing... timeout... ok, if i run from xterm the old version - the same thing... plus these warnings:

bash-3.00$ firefox

(firefox-bin:5709): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value has wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)
*** loading the extensions datasource
*** ExtensionManager:_updateManifests: no access privileges to application directory, skipping.

(firefox-bin:5709): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value has wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)
*** loading the extensions datasource
*** ExtensionManager:_updateManifests: no access privileges to application directory, skipping.
bash-3.00$

now, when i su, and run either the old version or the new one i works fine... so, the trouble might be in access rights... the firefox directory is in my home directory with full r/w/x rights.. still nothing...
this is the first time i encounter this problem... on my home computer this never happened before...
any ideas?

Where did you get the package from? There is an official Firefox version 1.5.0.1 package for Slackware 10.2: http://slackware.it/en/pb/search.php...&t=1&q=firefox

You could install it with "upgradepkg mozilla-firefox.......".

It depends on how you installed Firefox. Just running $ firefox will call the first binary called firefox in your path enviroment value. If the new version is not there, it'll load the older one.
If you want to run a binary that's not in the path, either write the full path, like /home/test/firefox1-5/firefox or go into that dir and type ./firefox
