no dhcp connection/ no DHCPOFFERS received

Hi folks,

I am trying to get my machine online - without success. Here is what I've done so far:

Notebook: Thinkpad T42
OS: Slack 13
Connected via cable to a university network (note: via Windows XP you need no IP/DNS/Gateway information whatsoever; you receive everything automatically and the i-net works just fine).

darkstar$ ifconfig
# eth1 is UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST
darkstart$ dhclient eth1
# gives: DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval X
# 5 times and ends with: No DHCPOFFERS received
# No working leases in persistent database - sleeping
darkstar$ dhcpcd eth1
# gives: err, eth1: timed out
# warn, eth1: using IPV4LL address SOME.IP.ADDRESS

Any idea what's going wrong here? The cable works fine with a windows machine.
Appreciate any help!
gg

you shouldn't need to run dhclient direcly... instead run /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to initialize your network.

also, post the *full* output of ifconfig.. what you have doesn't tell us much. as well, post the full contents of /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf so we can see your network config.

we also need more information about your network setup. are you behind a router, or connected directly to the modem? did your network admin give you a dhcp server to use?

that's because slackware assumes you know what you're doing and windows assumes you're a moron. if you're new to linux and looking for something that won't require you to do extra configuration, slackware probably isn't for you. instead try something like ubuntu or mint.

This may be relevant. I ran a trial of Slackware 13 off a magazine dvd and was astonished that it loaded the NIC module but didn't connect out to my router, there was no address and the log had lines like yours.

I came across a thread elsewhere about the "dhcpd" being broken. I don't have that test disk still going but I somehow disabled the dhcpd in a startup script or just renamed its binary. After a reboot the "normal" dhcp did its stuff.
