no desktop in gnome for new Slackware 10

Hi,

I just installed Slackware 10 (from windows2000). Anyway, I installed it successfully and I can get X-windows up using the GNOME desktop (I didn't install the KDE package). HOWEVER, While I have a top and bottom menu, and can access the gnome menu where I can launch programs like mozilla etc I don't have a desktop background (just a fishbone black and white pattern) and I cannot launch the "Browse Filesystem" file manager. I also have no way of getting to a home directory etc. Program's like mozilla work fine but on my friends Slackware 10 system he has several desktop icons and I don't even have a desktop. Any ideas what my issue is with GNOME?
Thanks!

It seems you have not or can not start nautilus. Start terminal (f.E. Alt+F2, type xterm) and try to launch nautilus (type nautilus in terminal) and look at messages what could be wrong.

Ahhh thankyou! great suggestion. It was missing the paranoia CD library. I guess I didn't install it cause I didn't want a command line cd player. Little did I know it was required for GNOME functionality.
Anyways, Thanks again!

Its true, the Nautilus paranoia CD burning package has to be installed for GNOME to work properly. I removed this package and found that my GNOME desktop had disappeared. I didn't even have a bottom panel.

I mainly use KDE but this problem really bugged me until I fixed it
