Nikon D80 problem
 

Hi, I'm using Slackware 11 and have a Nikon D80 which is recognized as a USB device in the info centre and in dmesg at startup but kde doesn't recognize it. I have tried all types of fstab entries but keep getting "bad superblock" or "not found" or "wrong filesystem" error messages.
Any ideas?

PS. Knoppix finds it straight of, no problems, as does WinXP, so it is not a hardware problem.

What do you mean when you say "KDE does not recognize it"?
Start up Knoppix, issue "mount" command and look what file system does it uses for your D80 camera. I believe it should be vfat. D80 should work as standard usb data contaner device, like a flash drive or so. Why do you use fstab, instead of directly mounting it, or using HAL.

Try using rescan-scsi-bus at a root terminal prompt with your camera attached and see if that locates your device.
I used the above command to locate my SD card on my Nikon camera when I was running Slack 11. Sometimes I would need to boot the computer with the SD card inserted to allow Slack 11 to find it.
This is a very good reason to upgrade to Slack 12 as now my SD card auto-mounts when I insert it into my USB card reader.

Thanks for the help. I can get the camera to be mounted and get photos from it by issuing the mount command, at least for a while. I suppose I was expecting kde to do this automatically. Cheers, catonic.
