Question NIC Configuration

Hi everyone,

First, I want to apologize for my complete ignorance with linux. I've seen it for 2 days.

I've gotten everything to install fine except my NIC. When I run netconfig, I understand that it is supposed to probe my NIC. It asks me for the name of my machine, domain, ip, subnet, gateway, and DNS. But at no point does it probe my NIC, at least visibly.

I checked to see if I had rc.netdevice and it's not there.

Can anyone steer me from here?

My NIC is a Netgear (Baynetworks) FA310TX Rev-D1. I'm running a linksys Wireless Access Point Router with DHCP off.

Thanks in advance,

Firestorm

P.S. I'm running the TOPOLOGILINUX distro which is Slackware 9.0 which runs on on NTFS volume.

Thanks for the help. I ran ifconfig -a, and eth0 is there. I was also able to do a loopback ping on it. So, it appears that my NIC is installed after all.

However, I am not able to ping outside the local machine. I cannot ping my gateway. Any ideas from here?

if your dhcp is working try this...

dhcpcd eth0

or manually configure, use the correct ip address that you want...

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.101

then you need to set the default gateway

route add default gw 192.168.0.1

then you need the dns servers in /etc/resolv.conf

like this...

"contents of file /etc/resolv.conf"

nameserver 68.63.0.5
nameserver 68.63.0.6

Wow David! It worked. I'm typing the reply on my linux side. I really appreciate the help. I wonder why netconfig doesn't set that stuff in the respective files?

anyways, I'm up and running. I really appreciate the help!

Since you were configuring for a static IP and you stated that netconfig did not probe for the NIC, it is because the eth0 was allready present in /dev/net/dev. You might want to review the following thread as well on Slack 9 and rc.hotplug.
