Newbie on slackware, coming from Debian. Don´t know how to install things
 

I have been using debian for 3 years. Today i downloaded Slackware and i want to try it. I have just installed it on my old pentium 166. I need to install 3 programs:

Mysql
Apache
Links2

How can i do it (there is no apt-get :D )?

Google turned up a lot of help... Try "slackware apache", "slackware mysql" and "slackware links2"

Welcome to SW. Since you are familiar with apt, you should take a look at slapt-get and install it if it will suit your needs. SW web page has pkg search tool to find pkg of interest. You can mount cd1 and cd2 to look for particular pkg also. All the pkgs you want are readily available on install cds or from SW download web page. linuxpackages web page is also available. Be mindful that some pkgs from linuxpackages are built from installs with Freerock Gnome so you may have trouble with some of those working in SW10.2.
http://wwww.slackersbible.org/book or Linux Essentials Book2 by Alan Hicks etal( in documents section of linuxpackages web page) are useful for orienting yourself to SW. Have fun:)

Ok, thanks for the tips guys. I just realized that my network card isn´t configured. I tried netconfig but it said that the command doesn´t exist.

netconfig is contained in tcpip package. It may be found along with other apps requested by you on 1st installation CD in subdirectory slackware/n ie. section 'n' as networking progs/tools.

Also, mysql crashes as soon as i start it. I have only 16mb of ram but a big swap. Could this be the problem?

SatanicHare, not all my posts are like that. But an hour before this post he was dabbling in installing Debian on this particular machine.

Had a rough day at the office. You're right, I should have avoided answering this post with a "RTFM before posting questions that have been answered a hundred times"... Shame on me...:tisk: Won't happen again!

There are some instructions in the /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld file that should help you fix this. You probably want to create a /etc/my.cnf tailored for a low resource machine (there are some examples in /etc too).

netconfig is in /sbin its probably installed but isnt in your path.

just do /sbin/netconfig

if you cant find a command you might want to try slocate.
to set it up: (database has to be updated when new files are added)
updatedb
to use it:
locate <command name, or file you are looking for>

The mysql error was because of permissions.

And i didn´t have netconfig because i didn´t installed tcpip package.

Now everything is working. I´m really impressed with slackware, it´s really stable and fast!

I´m thinking of migrating my mail server to slackware, i really enjoyed it.
