Newbie looking for pointers

I'm somewhat new when it comes to linux, and my buddy insisted I start off learning it with Slackware. I have the hardware already setup and by some miracle I managed to fumble my way through installing Slackware 11.0 on it. My goal is to work my way up to using the box as a gateway/firewall (rather than as an occupant on the network), and maybe eventually as a webserver (I don't have a static IP, so I know that's not going to be the easiest thing to do).

Anyways, I've been spending the last few hours collecting url's for helpful information in configuring linux, but I was wondering if anyone might know of some additional tutorials, websites, or HOW-TO's that are specific to installing and configuring Slackware 11.0 for use as a gateway/firewall. More importantly, I want to familiarize myself with the operating system itself so that I can increase my skill level to the point that I can configure the box to serve whatever function I want it to perform without having to call upon my buddy to fix.

If you know of some helpful websites, know some useful pointers, or just have a helpful anecdote to pass along it would be greatly appreciated.

1) The Slackware Book - the definitive Slackware book, online.

2) Slackware Linux Basics - another excellent Slackware book online.

3) The Slackware Wiki

4) Alien's Wiki - the personal wiki of a Slackware contributer and regular here.

5) Human Readable - A Slackware Desktop Enhancement Guide
- the site of another regular here, very useful.

These should be a good start, enjoy yourself

EDIT: spelling

Thanks for the websites - I've added them to my list to review. I've looked through the 12 pages or so of posts in this sub-forum, and while I'm sure they'll become useful at some point, the more important fact is that I'm not even sure what questions to ask just yet, but when I do need to ask the questions the search function will certainly be useful. Thanks again.

here's another very good one from Shilo:

also check the huge archive of howto's at www.tldp.org

for a firewall, start with the intro at guarddog, a really easy and well-done app:

Hi,

Welcome to Slackware!

Look at my sig for some good online reference.

Hey, just get yourself a spiral notebook to jot down system notes or questions as you go to compile your questions. This will also give you a means to trail or track any problems. It is always good to document what you have done to your system, be hardware or software. The System log/diary will be a jewel that will shine when needed.
