Newbie guide to install gnome 2.6

i'm wondering if there are any step by step guides out there to help a person like myself (newb) install the new gnome 2.6 desktop? The first time i needed to recompile my kernel, i used the sticky at the top of this forum and everything went smoothly. i'm hoping there is a similiar guide for installing gnome 2.6 on my computer (slack 9.1 currently kernel 2.6 with gnome 2.4). also, would dropline be easier to install? i cant check right now because there site is down due to excessive bandwidth usage . thanks for your help.

You could do worse than the Gnome section of Beyond Linux From Scratch http://lfs.securewebservices.co.uk/blfs/view/cvs/ Why don't you download a copy of the current CVS version? http://lfs.securewebservices.co.uk/blfs/downloads/cvs/ It also pays to look around the http://www.gnome.org/ site and also, lurk in the gnome forums http://gnomesupport.org/forums/

Dropline is super easy to install. You download the Dropline installer, the run the Dropline installer. All done. Always a good idea to check if there are any new config files that you have to modify. They'll have a .new ending. That's the only caveat I can think of.

Hi,

There is an installation guide for Gnome here :

http://www.karubik.de/gig/

This is a step by step guide to compile Gnome 2.6 on your system from sources, but be warned, it may be difficult and may takes a long time... for me the best choice is use Dropline gnome 2.6 .
