Question Newb Needs Help Setting Up Webserver

Quick background... this past xmas i upgraded my web dev server hardware from a p3 500mhz with 128 ram to an amd 1600+ with 512 ram... i was running win2k but REALLY desire a linux machine since its much more secure and will NOT require me to run A/V software or a software firewall (besides iptables)

Basically my goal is to have the latest apache 2.x and PHP 5.x and MySQL 4.x running on my slackware 10.2 box with samba setup so I can move my files from my XP workstation to the linux dev box... ive fussed around for a few days and I cant seem to get anything right!

I've been googling around for a nice tutorial but what ive mainly found is all dry and skims ALOT of stuff...

Basically i need a walkthrough from the install of the kernal (packages and such) to the installing of the software(apache 2.x php 5.x etc..).... I can edit httpd.conf and php.ini (maybe php.conf for linux) myself since im used to these files in the win2k env. but I'm REALLY lost in the linux env.

Be nice if there was a linux distro that was made JUST for webserving as there is one for just security (ipcop, smoothwall)

ANY help would be glady accepted and REALLY appreciated

I have some limited use with red hat 9 and slackware from back in 00' when i was in college so I'm not a complete idiot but REALLY need help

i could also use suggestions on partitioning my 120 gb HD that is in the box... FreeBSD chops it up automatically but slacky doesnt so any help there with FDISK commands and whatnot would also be great

thanks for your time!

~Brian

thats a great site that leads you through everything you need to set up slackware and a webserver and all that jazz. shilo's actually a member here and i think his guide is a sticky at the top of the forum..not sure
oh, and cfdisk is a program in slack, really intuitive with menus and stuff.

I think the slackware book http://www.slackbook.org/html/book.html might also be a good place to look for basic disk partitioning etc. Slackware is a very good choice for a web server as it comes with everything you need pre-installed and ready to go. I generally use fdisk for partitioning. All you do during install is:

fdisk /dev/hda (assuming /dev/hda is the harddisk)

and then type p to get the current disk table printed on screen. Typing m will give you all of the options you need. Typing w will write any changes you've made and exit. Typing q will just quit without making any changes.

This is another tutorial which might help: http://www.insyte.uni.cc/
