For you guys, that like Me prefer AMD graphics, I can report that doom 2016 works well on current multilib
(kernel 4.18.9) with AlienBobs steam package.
The only extra installed package, that might be related or not, is OpenAL.
To get kernel support for my vega64 graphics I "rolled my own".
Stock config will not work with amdgpu dal code and it is still finnicky, It spews a long stack trace in the
kernel log from something that crashes when kms starts. Originally it would not work at all.
Disabling "AMD Secure memory encryption" (after a tip from the gentoo site) finally got it going
and it seems to function as good as any other driver, in spite of the mentioned stack trace.
Doom on our system, performance wise, is somewhat behind win10. Vulkan is a must!
I can play with everything cranked to absolute maximum in 4k with framerates always > 70 fps on w10.
On our system with the "steamplay" in between it drops to about 45-50 fps, but reducing
resolution to 2.5k gets framerates back up to 90 fps and a very playable game.
Default Doom settings is to use opengl which sucks even at 1920x1080 (45 fps), and you, like me, will probably
not have much luck changing api settings once Doom is started.
The solution is to edit launch options. Just add +r_renderapi 1 and you're home.

After upgrading current (glibc eudev mesa llvm etc...) yesterday,
Doom on vulkan stopped working.
It just crashes on launch. On opengl it still "works" (i.e. sucks).
I also had a few udev related problems with warnings filling my logs.
So not a completely successful upgrade. Maybe you want to skip this one.

Sins of a Solar Empire and Skyrim are working better than they did under WINE. Have yet to check out any other old Windows titles though.

I just wish i could get steam to work on my machine. Im running 14.2 current 32bit with all updates. I have a AMD card. I installed Steam using AlienBobs pkg. I also installed the required OpenAL

I just switched to using Slackware full time. No more windows. I really don't know what im doing though. I have been playing around with Slackware for about 10 years just havn't used it enough to learn anything. lol

Im assuming i need to load a driver although i thought everything would work with the default kernel driver.

Are you running 14.2 or -current? They are two different things where 14.2 is the latest stable and -current is the development version for the next Slackware release (eventually 15.0).

Make sure the packages you installed from AlienBob are for the correct version of Slackware you're running. If you are running 14.2, you'll also likely need libtxc_dxtn (the patent has since expired, so it is included in newer mesa versions, but 14.2 won't see those).

Now, as to your actual error, I'm guessing you are on 14.2 and you have a new enough graphics card that it isn't properly supported with 14.2. Can you provide more details on your video card? Also, can you provide the output of lspci -k | grep -iA3 video so we can see how the system sees your card?

Sorry for the confusion. I started with 14.2 then updated to -current. So i am running current. lspci -k | grep -iA3 video returns nothing. Just back to the prompt.

I did find this. not sure if this is helpful

Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Baffin [Radeon RX 550 640SP / RX 560] (rev cf)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] Baffin [Radeon RX 550 640SP / RX 560/560X]
        Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
        Kernel modules: amdgpu

Sorry, it should've been vga instead of video, but you got us the right info.

Your card should be decently supported in the 4.14 kernel that is included with -current (although, it would likely benefit from the massive kernel improvements for AMD cards from 4.15 and up -- if you're interested, check out https://dusk.idlemoor.tk/linux-4.18/ for the latest kernel that is compiled and provided as Slackware packages, thanks to 55020). Can you provide the output of dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log? These should help us find if your card is being detected properly by the kernel and X.

Steam brings some stuff that does not work on our system. Just run:
find ~/.steam/root/ \( -name "libgcc_s.so*" -o -name "libstdc++.so*" -o -name "libxcb.so*" \) -print -delete
in your home directory and start steam again.
I works everytime on my systems (64-bit multilib).

Welcome to Linux in general and LQN and Steam specifically. Since you asked "what other packages might need to be installed for some other games" you are in the right place and IMHO on the right distro. While there are a few packages that can be installed like OpenAL, SDL, and a few others that can have positive effects and may even be required for some games outside of Steam, what can have the greatest effect is utilising the power of the subsystems and then testing and tweaking for what pleases you most. Thankfully, Linux, and especially Slackware Linux which still holds on to simple text configs which makes this readily available and pretty simple both to try and to back off if you don't like the results.

Naturally the first area to address is Graphics. Make sure you have the best driver for your video card whether Intel, AMD/ATi, or nVidia. It takes a little reading to tweak each of those for top performance but choosing the right one is often a huge improvement. You can test your results for a baseline comparison with a suite like --- Unigine Heaven --- which is both helpful and possibly humbling depending on your hardware.

Graphics setup delivers what you see and how you see it but setting up your mouse determines how you can react to what you see. You will likely find this LQN wiki quite helpful
--- How to Setup a Gaming Mouse ---

There is a thread on this Slackware forum about setting CPU profiles for Performance vs/ Powersave that you may find useful.

The stock Slackware kernel is quite good but not new enough for some top AMD/Ati video cards. Learning how to compile your own, probably using "make oldconfig" to clone your working settings can make a difference if you have one of those cards. Once you gain a little experience with "rolling your own" you might want to try tweaking a few things for even more performance such as settings for specific CPU and Timing and possibly Low Latency depending on the quality of your hardware and your willingness to spend the time "go deep". Alien Bob made a nice walkthrough on customising kernels that dates way back but still is very useful today. You can find that here

-- Slackware kernel Building and Customising ---

There are also some base tweaks that could be useful for some games, especially online games, with the sysctl command. Here's a few that might help again depending on your hardware and your ISP/Plan. I'm listing a few here but I suggest you do some research on sysctl and specific applications to know what these do and whether tyhey apply to yuour system. None of this bunch will have any profound negative effects on any system but there are many sysctl specifics that can so please don't just try blindly. Learn what your system can do before you do it since one of the great things about Linux, and again Slackware Linux in particular, is the Power and Responsibility of actually being a worthy Admin who owns his system instead of letting others run it and you just "leasing it".

Code:
sysctl vm.swappiness=10

sysctl net.ipv4.udp_rmem_min=16384

sysctl net.ipv4.udp_wmem_min=16384

sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_fastopen=3
I hope you find this both enlightening and challenging but above all useful and rewarding.

If all your games are working, then probably none. You will know when you need more packages when games fail to start with missing libraries, where you install the packages with those libraries and hope the versions are compatible with ubuntu which the game developers likely tested against...

Thanks a bunch enorbet and everyone else for the help. Like i said earlier i have been tinkering with Slackware for a long time. I was just never able to fully jump in until recently do to the Citrix Receiver (which i need for work) not working properly. Luckily, AlienBob set me straight on that one and now i have only Slackware installed and am able to work and do everything in need. Here is the fix for Citrix Receiver if anyone needs it https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ox-4175638684/.

This probably isn't the place for this but here is a bit about me.

Im a windows .net programmer and have been for 18 years. Most of my time goes to my children but they are getting older and i find that i have more time to work on updating my computer skills. Im going to be building 2 computers for my kids to use and plan on using Slackware. That is what lead to my steam issues. Their games are Disney games and none of those are working on my computer.

I will do some more research. One thing i think i need to do is load the 64 bit version of current. I have always had issues in the past with it but i will try againi.

Thanks again.
