New Slackware Install

My pc is a Dell Demension 2400.Still using the onboard sound and video and onboard network.Right now I'm running Fedora 3 and once installed everything works meaning get right online no drivers to install.First question is are chances good with slack after the install I would be sitting pretty like in fedora as far as right online. What can I expect from slack as far as if I do a full install. In fedora I set up yum and apt for installing packages but also have compiled some from source code.Does slack have a way to install packages or will I install all from source code.Where can i go to get a good idea what to expect during the install so I have a rough idea what I will encounter and choices to make. Now what does slack come with for a desktop GUI.I downloaded and burned the images for 10.1 if that helps with answering my questions. Now i assume like fedora I edit /etc/fstab to have it mount my slave drive.I also have cdrom and a dvd/cd burner.I do want to do a full install and is there that option during the install. Thank You

i'm not sure about the sitting pretty part, at least not imediately after the install... remember that slackware tries to keep things as simple as possible, and this means that automating your configuration isn't really a priority (simple is not equal to easy)... i'm pretty sure your hardware will be supported (anything supported by the official linux kernel is supported by slackware), but unless you use something like hotplug (yes, it's included) i think it's fair to expect that you'll probably at the very least need to uncomment a few lines for your modules in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, for example...

i have no idea as i don't use fedora... but you can take a look at the software packages that come with slackware 10.1 here:

ftp://slackware.oregonstate.edu/pub/...1/PACKAGES.TXT

ftp://slackware.oregonstate.edu/pub/...0.1/slackware/

yes, slackware uses binary packages... but you still have the ability to compile anything you want... it's your choice... oh, BTW:

these are the main commands for installing/upgrading/removing slackware packages... i will use a package called example-1.01.tgz in these examples:
Code:
installpkg example-1.01.tgz
Code:
removepkg example
Code:
upgradepkg example-1.02.tgz
there's also a menu-driven tool called pkgtool which you can use...

slackware doesn't come with any automated package management tools (at least not officialy) but there's several third-party tools you can install if you want package automation for whatever reason... i think on cd2 there's one or two of said tools in the "extra" directory, but i'm not sure...

check-out this link: http://slackbook.lizella.net/

Now what does slack come with for a desktop GUI
it comes with the X.org GUI, as do most other modern distros... but you are probably asking about window managers and desktop environments - it comes with blackbox, fluxbox, xfce, kde, gnome, twm, etc. etc. etc. keep in mind that the gnome version that's included in 10.1 is old and gnome has been removed from slackware after the 10.1 release... so if you want a modern gnome you'll have to go to a third party such as http://gsb.sf.net or http://gware.sf.net and even http://www.dropline.net/gnome/

cool... BTW, remember that you only need the first two CDs... cd 3 and 4 are the source code...

yeah...

I also have cdrom and a dvd/cd burner.
no problem...

yes, you have that option, and it's actually recommended that you do that, specially if you're just getting started with slackware...

Slack doesn't use a bunch of auto-config tools. You may need to edit a few config files to get everything working properly. While at first this may seem like a pain, once you've used it a while you'll understand how this leads to a much more stable system as there aren't any "tools" borking your system.

I installed slack tonight and when it reboots it enters runlevel 3 for starters. Also when i startx i get Fatal server error No screens found.Did I do something wrong or is it because it doesn't support my video.During the install I told it to use the standard for video.

You did nothing wrong, it's normal to need to configure X before starting it.
Try with the tools, xorgconfig, xorgsetup, xorgcfg or X -configure. Be sure to read what they say.
