New Nvidia Drivers (2.6 Compatible)
Dunno if anyone else has already posted this (sorry if they have) - just checked the nvidia site and found some new drivers that are supposed to work with new 2.6 kernel - havent tried them myself yet as not at my slackware box - but will try them later :)
If you have tested them - do they work ? any probs? cant post the link as it says i need to have more than 5 posts :p bit hard when your new ;) - anyway you all now where to go :D Linux Display Driver - IA32 Version: 1.0-5336 Operating System: Linux IA32 Release Date: January 26, 2004 Release Highlights Support for Linux 2.6 kernels. Fixed AGP failures on some VIA motherboards. Fixed a problem that prevented X from running on Samsung X10 laptops.: |
well with slack and the 2.6.1 kernel that i am using, i couldn't get the drivers from nvidias site to work ... they just wouldn't install with many errors .... which i won't get into ...
but the drivers here are kinda tweaked up to be working with the 2.6.x kernel, and they installed no problems at all ... so if you do try the ones straight from nvidias site and they dont' work, then try these, or simply just use these ... |
Just installed them, they work and glxgears gives more fps (around 4000 instead of about 3500 before) here so I'm keeping them! ;)
|
Dr0zz - ye i have tried them too - they work - but after using them i found that the kernel was tainted and i couldnt access my dvdr drive anymore :(
Not saying it was those drivers could have been anything, i just hope these new drivers work for me when i get the time to install slackware and try them :) |
Thanx for the update. Those drivers were the only thing keeping me from installing 2.6.1 on my main machine :)
|
I've been using the 5336 drivers since the 26th, replaced the patched drivers from minion.de... no noticeable difference, but they work fine, as has always been my experience with nVidia drivers.

Just installed it, started without problem, but noticed that the monitor is kinda darker now, have to turn up the brightness setting for monitor.
Anyway, my question is, is there anyway to switch to the new driver without rebooting? |
I'm using the new 2.6 one from the nvidia site and they work great with 2.6.1 and my mx440 8x agp.
The fps under glxgears is still ridiculously low but it has been for every version of the drivers under any kernel, but at least it works. :( If you don't want to reboot then just switch to run level 3, install the new driver (uninstalls the old one by default) and then startx again. |
