New NVidia driver locks up X

First off, I don't know if this is in the right forum. Move it if it's not. :)

Okay. I installed some new NVidia video card driver (finally). I am happy with it because I can now play Quake 3 and stare at all the cool screensavers. But all is not well. :(

I sometimes have to exit the X windows system. When I try "startx" again it sometimes just locks up on my. The whole PC. The screen stays black instead of flashing the NVidia logo and starting X. Nothing gets me out of this horrible lock up, I have tried everything (ctrl+alt+F2-F6, ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+alt+backsace). Not even caps lock can be turned on or off from the keyboard. So I end up haveing to hold my power button down for about 10 seconds. I never have to do that. The PC is just freezing on me. I don't know what to do. I read through the manual/FAQ for an answer, all I found was something about adding a little line to the XF86Config file telling it to not look for certain display devices that are not present. I tried it out and it hasn't helped. This only happens sometimes (alot though, about 80% of the times that I try to startx after previously shutting it down.). It's making me angry and everything.

Please help me out.

XF86Config?

Could you post your /etc/X11/XF86Config file here so we could compare it to ours....?

I have a GForce 4 MX440 and it's working very well for a long time... Even after upgrading the Slackware kernel 2.4.22 to 2.4.23 (Current)!!!

BTW, You're on Slackware I hope!?

Yes I am on Slackware. :)

# This XF86Config file is designed for use with the VESA framebuffer.

# With the new driver, it should no longer be required to have frame buffer

hmm, i thought it was coincidence (spelling...), but i also installed the latest Nvidia drivers, and enabled openGL. Works like a charm, but completly freezes my computer after a few days..

They got you to huh?

What are we gonna' do now?

Tinkster 12-16-2003 07:41 PM

I've "healed" a NVidia pooter locking up
the machine by disabling APM for the
X-server ...

Cheers,
Tink

Posty 12-16-2003 08:06 PM

Disabling APM? I don't know why, but this sounds bad to me. I am a noob, you know? Maybe someone can go into some detail about this? Please? Remember, it has to let things (Quake 3, cool screensavers) work right.

I don't see anything about how to disable APM in the docs that came with the driver... They do talk about disableing AGP. Would that fix it?

WAIT! Can I pass a command to the kernel at boot time somehow? To tell the module not to load it or something???

Nope... I tried loading my kernel with the command MyKernel apm=no

It didn't do anything speacial. :(

Someone better tell me how to do this corectly before I figure it out the hard way be screwing with my system too much.

cb9fl 12-16-2003 09:53 PM

I'm running slack 9.1 also and have manually added apm by uncommenting it. I did this so my computer will power off with the halt command. On occasion my computer locks up to and only since I've added apm.

How can you remove apm from the x session (dropline) but not from linux so the halt command still powers off the computer?

geforce ti4400 if anyone wants to know

kadaver 12-17-2003 03:58 AM

Are you using AGPGart or NVAgp?
AGPGart is the kernel's own AGP driver, wich is known to cause problems on certain nvidia chipsets. If you are using AGPGart, disable it at boot-time and put this in your XF86Config file below the Driver "nvidia" line:

Option "NvAGP" "1"

(Where 1=NvAGP, 2=AGPGart, 3=Auto)

This tells the driver to use nvidias own AGP-driver.
And remember that you've got to disable AGPGart before trying NvAGP otherwise you'll get some interesting messages =)

In
/etc/X11/XF86Config
add
Option "NoPM" "true"
in the
Section "ServerFlags"

I tried what kadaver said and it seems to work perfectly now. At boot time I told it to load "Linux" (my kernel) with the option agpgart=no

Code:

Linux agpgart=no
Yeah... So I added that line to XF86Config and it worked. It's not freezing anymore. :)

I did do the kernel part correctly, right?

Kovacs 12-18-2003 02:23 AM

I have just solved a similar problem (a full crash on startx). It turned out to be an AGP issue. I had had my video card (Geforce 4 MX440) working fine with the nvidia drivers with my previous motherboard, but when I tried to get it working with my new ASUS PS800D motherboard (which uses an SiS 655 chipset and 8x AGP) it would lock up. The solution turned out to be adding these two lines to my XF86Config under "device":

Option "NvAGP" "2"
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV"

although I suspect that it was the first of the two that actually did the trick. "NvAGP" "0" also worked (disabling AGP) but I figure that it's got to be faster with AGP. There is a list in the driver readme of which motherboards you should use the NvAGP with and which you should use AGPGart.

thegreatgatsby 12-18-2003 02:53 AM

How do I disable AGPGart at boot time in Suse 9.0?
I'm having similar probs.
(as are many others looking at the nvnet forums - but I could not find an answer that works there)

Thanks

Posty 12-18-2003 02:03 PM

When you are asked by LILO or GRUB what kernel to load, just type in the kernel that is listed and add apggart=no.

Code:

Boot: Linux apggart=no
I think this is the right way. It worked for me atleast. Can someone clear this up? Is it apggart=no or just apg=no?

thegreatgatsby 12-18-2003 05:23 PM

SUSE doesn't ask which kernel I'd like to load...
