New motherboard : eth0 gone missing

My Gigabyte AMD motherboard died and I replaced it with a new Asus AMD board + A6-5400k processor. I expected to need to re-install Slackware but to my surprise all booted nicely straight from the hard drive with the right drivers loaded for video, sound etc.

Only thing missing is network interface eth0. lspci reports that I have a Realtek RTL8168/8111 ethernet controller and lsmod shows that the r8169 driver loads and dmesg shows four lines that start with "r8169" and indicate no errors. However after all boot processes are finished ifconfig shows only the "lo" interface. No eth0. "ifconfig eth0 up" tells me that there is "No such device".

Previous MB had, I think, an NVIDIA ethernet card and I wonder whether I am still loading an incompatible driver for the previous controller and if so how to detect it and stop it interfering.

I know that the ethernet interface can work, because if I boot with a SLAX live USB I get an eth0 interface and also if I boot with the Slackware 14.1 installation CD.

Thanks

To detect:
Code:
lspci -k | grep -A3 net
To stop, write:
Code:
blacklist <driver name>
in a file whose name shall end in .conf in /etc/modprobe.d

maybe ifconfig -a would show it ?
if it does show it as eth1 then go to /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and edit it there

Thanks both. Learned something from both of you. "lspci -k" - never knew about that switch which is very helpful. Also "ifconfig -a" which shows more information that just "ifconfig".

Anyways, the answer in this case seems to be to download from RealTek a specific r8168 driver and use the installation script they supply which re-names the r8169.ko driver and puts the new one in its place.

My network interface then shows up as eth1 rather than as eth0 but I can live with this no problem.

Thanks for the quick responses.

you don't have to live with it
just edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

Thanks for this extra piece of advice. Just had a look at the file and the edit required seemed obvious. So I went ahead and eth0 is now back in action.
