Question New kernel problems

Dear all,
I'm trying to upgrade to the 2.6.2 kernel from my current 2.4.22 on slackware 9.1. After going through the routine steps (make clean, menuconfig, dep, install, modules,modules_install, and edting the lilo.conf file), I finally boot into the new kernel. But linux seems unable to detect the network. Also, when it loads, it lists errors such as being unable to load the modules to support the NTFS mount (my windows 2000 drive) and other modules such as agpart. The network has completely disappeared. When I run lsmod, no modules are loaded, which I suspect is the problem.

Anyway, so I read some threads, and learn that the new kernel requires new module_init tools, so I download those and install them. But the same error messages appear, and the network is still non-existent.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? Any pointers on how to solve them?

Eagerly awaiting a miracle, and thanks in advance for any help =]

An eager slacker waiting for 2.6.2 to work.

khtse.

did you use the config from your old kernel? or did you start from scratch??

might want to check and make sure you have all the nessacry support enabled on your new kernel.

I have this same problem, I have recompiled about 100 times and tried different things. I cant seem to get the new kernel to autoload modules. I can load them manually however. Plus my usb mouse wont work.

I may be able to help you guys...the same thing happened to me. I'm assuming it stems from the fact that the old kernel had it built into the kernel, but I compiled it as a module in the new one. Try editing /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and see if the module for your network card is commented out. If so, uncomment it.

I also had the same problem, I think what may have solved the problem was when installing the new module_init_tools (3...) and by giving `configure' the option

`configure --prefix=../'

which put the tools in /sbin rather than /usr/local/sbin. This is off the top of my head, so do a little research first, hopefully it helps though.

Actully just do this .. I have compiled that kernel 4 times already. (twice on my computers and 2 twice on a friends)

1) Modify the Makefile so that the kernel is copyed in to the boot DIR by the make install

2) Modify lilo.conf (copy and paste your linux entry the way it is and add .old onto the end of one of the boot kernels and the label.

3) make menuconfig from SCRACH it pretty much detects all my hardware so I'm gussing you will find yours as well.. so make the nessarey chnages and save it.

4) make

5) make modules

6) make modules_install

7) make install

8) reboot

and your done.
