New Google+ Community for Slackware...

I just created a new community at Google+ for the Slackware community. I'm hoping it will be a useful and valuable addition to the family of Slackware support resources as well as a kewl place to just hang and chat with other Slackers.

If you would like to join you can do so by visiting this link HERE

I hope that helps! And I'll see you there :)

Kindest regards,

.

Slackware Linux G+ Community membership growing rapidly

Man, the community is about a day old now, and over 100 people have joined!

That's wonderful news.

I think there's going to be quite a bit of development and shaping in the way G+ continues to evolve, having already said goodbye to Google Wave (how soon we forget eh?).

Anyway, the G+ Slackware Linux Community is shaping up nicely and it's certainly a good place to post links to Slackware news, tuts, How-To's, blogs, etc.

Kind of a self-contained place to accumulate a lot about the community, and aspects of Slackware that don't pertain just to support issues.

For those who have already joined, pls feel free to post links to your blogs and other interesting Slacktoids (whatever that means).

For those who haven't, I'm sure it will at least ease many into the whole G+ thing - to have a safe place in a haven of fellow Slackers where one can get acclimated to this new Google thingie way of interaction ;)

Kindest regards,

.

As a follow up report on the way the community is shaping up, it has evolved and taken on a warm atmosphere, where people have been collecting and sharing the latest Slackware related news, HowTos and tutorials, and blogs that many would otherwise miss.

It's a unique in the sense that many of the most current and interesting events and occurrences are being shared amongst the community. Most of the well known blogs and repos for bleeding edge SlackBuilds and packages are featured with intros and links, including help forums like LQ here and the Slackware Documentation project.

Some of the most recent interesting news features that I've personally enjoyed are LDAP on Slack and booting Slack on UEFI boxes.

Of course the group is keen on closely following the blogs of Willy and AlienBoB too, for those almost up to the minute tidbits, and one thing that I really enjoyed checking out (and wasn't even aware of) and playing with was the WMFS (Window Manager From Scratch) for Slackware / SalixOS.

More of a community where people share ideas and tuts - their own as well as others - than a help site like what we have here at LQ, and a wonderful place for new Slackers to discover all of the various things people do in Slackware.

That last point, I think, makes the G+ Slackware Linux Community rather unique, refreshing, and useful for the entire Slackware community - not just n00bs :)

:hattip:

Must start thinking about creating the G+ account. So far the FB account has been enough social for me but if G+ Slack group means best source for news and info then...

Is having a mobile phone mandatory? I do not have one.

mlangdn 01-12-2013 10:33 AM

Nope - just click the link in the first post to get started.

stf92 01-12-2013 11:16 AM

That's what I did. And I had to subscribe to Google+. But then they ask for a mobile phone number! I never had one.

mlangdn 01-12-2013 01:09 PM

I didn't enter a mobile number....I have no idea why.

stf92 01-12-2013 01:12 PM

That's the second time someone in LQ says that! May be the user location.

You can skip that, there is a small link somewhere on the site to do that, IIRC.

stf92 01-12-2013 02:00 PM

Thanks, TobiSGD. I've look everywhere on the page (https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?s...419&lp=1&hl=en) but it is definitely not there. May be when you already have another Google account?

TobiSGD 01-12-2013 02:09 PM

You are right, i have a Google account (not Google+) already for a long time. they asked me a few times to add my phone number, but I don't see why I should give that to Google, so I denied that always.
FWIW, I just created a Google+ account and was not asked for my phone number.

Let's forget about Google+ for a moment. I think when you created the Google account they were not yet so ... strict as to the phone. But now the evil has worsen, I think. I not only have not a cellular phone but I won't have it till the day of my death.

[OT] :) I used to think like you, but then land line phone is too expensive compare with cellular one. So now I have a cellular one (pre-paid, seldom make calls) and use it as a land line replacement, I always forgot to bring it with me.

You can't just leave that blank?
I think it's optional as long as you enter the captcha.

If in my country it also is less expensive, but let's compare assuming zero incoming calls and 100 outgoing calls per month for each phone, the fix line and the cellular, I would also use it. But I use to travel in plublic transport vehicles. And when one hangs up the other's phone rings. So, you have not a single minute of peace. Also, if the service is now so cheap, it is because of the great number of people who has contracted it. For me, it is one of the greatest examples of a need being invented.

Yes, I just tried it and left it blank. But I now see it's the same [...] as facebook and twiter.

Update on the growth of the community...

In the wee hours of this morning, the community broke the 500 member mark.

It appears to be growing and evolving in way that people often communicate around a coffee house firepit, singing koombaya songs and sharing anectdotal items of interest to fellow songsters and latte lovers.

I know that for me, I never expected to be apprised and alerted to so many options and tools and other items of interest in the Slackware community.

To be sure (and thankfully so), the G+ Slackware Linux Community has not developed as yet another help site, or forum for tutorial and howto documentation, but rather, a friendly sort of place where people share their experiences, development projects, and humorous anecdotes about Slackware.

Yes we get some of that here, but the visual element involved and the "wall" type display of items that folks are sharing with each other is unique - irrespective of the capabilities that places like faceplant or Linkedin groups try to afford their users.

I think it's evolving into a truly cooperative sharing environment of ideas and resources that serves to strengthen the bond of Slackers everywhere.

I'll prolly report back again when the community's membership hits the 1k mark. In teh meantime, checkout some of the kewl things that others have shared with us all - you don't even have to join to check it out!

Kindest regards,

.

Wonderful news! We now have *eleven* members!!! :)

Hey all,

I thought that I would report back on the shape of things in our little sister community at Google Plus.

Great news! Membership in the Google Plus Slackware Linux Community has now grown to that of Eleven Members!

Hooray!!!

Wait... um... Pardon my binary. That's 1011 members LOL!

Yup. We've crossed some imaginary threshold at 1000 and the community has matured in many ways, including its own candor, decorum, and usefulness that I believe compliments our LQ Support Forum here in ways that may be better addressed in an environment perhaps better suited for sharing, rather than solving.

Of course, when you're in a fix, The LQ Slackware Support Forums here really are the place to land your plane, but when you have something to share, or show and tell, our G+ Slackware Linux Community augments the world of Slackers quite nicely IMNSHO :)

Anyway, I had been waiting for a while to give this thread a bump. The 1k mark is indeed another indicator of utility, and relevance. One I felt should be shared here again.

The G+ Slackware Linux Community has grown organically, and started with an announcement here and a few invites. I know most members have refrained from SPAMming, although anyone interested in Slackware Linux is encouraged to participate.

We've had a couple of folks show up thinking they could SPAM us, a couple of them with some interesting stuff, yet those posts are typically whacked rather promptly, as the community has preferred a rather familial, and on-topic feel.

Anyway, please pardon me, I know I'm a loquacious sort of bonehead, and I'll leave the rest of the meandering to my fellow LQ veterans and neophytes alike.

Kindest regards,

Time for another update on the gplus Slackware Linux Community...

Well it's been a while since bothering to post an update to the evolution of the Slackware Linux Community over at gplus.

We've grown in an almost exclusively organic way, with pretty much just this single thread here at LQ originally announcing the formation of the gplus community.

Anything else about the community other than the size of its membership is covered, for the most part, in other previous posts to this thread. Feel free to comment if there was something pertinent about the group or something you'd like to share about it here.

The real reason for updating this thread is to announce that the current membership level of the gplus Slackware Linux has just reached 3100 people!

Congrats to fellow Slackers everywhere, and when you get a chance, don't forget to post a link somewhere to the DVD subscription subscription page at slackware.com. If you would like an easy cut and paste of that link here it is:
https://store.slackware.com/cgi-bin/...gI9g&mv_pc=116

Well that's all for now! Thanks for making the gplus community an amazing, helpful, and friendly place to share Slackware related items of interest and news!
