New 12.0 Install - No sound

I've got an older C600 Dell laptop Latitude.. installed 12.0 with the "huge" kernel. I tried to play some songs with a downloaded XMMS, using ALSA, and OSS, and xmms would show that the music is playing, no errors like "cant find /dev/dsp" but no sound.

I checked alsamixer and turned up all the volumes, then saved with an alsactl store. I then tried several other players, xine, play from the command line, even cat somefile > /dev/dsp and nothing.

Weird thing is I had DSL (Damn Small Linux) running on it before the new hard drive came in, and the sound worked fine then. That was using the 2.4 kernel though.

What else should I check?

Nevermind, I fail.

alsaconf set it up, and it's working fine.

Hope this helps someone else.

No you don't fail, we learn by doing:-) For new Slackers here are the three commands you run as root to set-up sound.

#alsaconf

#alsamixer

#alsactl store
