Network unreachable. Network is down.

hello world.

My eth0 isn't working. I've tried running ./netconfig from sbin and I've tried to play with ifconfig, but I've had no luck. It has worked on SuSE and Fedora beautifully, and here it's working on WinXP. It's a SIS Ethernet "thing" that is part of my motherboard. HELP!

I'm running Slack 10,btw.

Many happy returns of the day.

Login as root
and at the console,
Code:
lspci
And post the results here

and also lsmod results.

Try pinging your own IP.

I have the same problem. Its caused a lot of head scratching because my eth0 works fine under Suse 9.

I dual boot with Suse and Slackware 10.

I've found that for some reason the eth0 is not enabled on boot up with slack. I seem to be able to get over it with

"ifconfig eth0 up" and then rebooting.

It sometimes works if I've been using suse first as well.

I don't understand why this should be the case but it works for me.

Can anyone explain and offer a way to get slak to recognise the card on bootup? Its obvioulsy supported or would not wor at all.

Spoke too soon!!!!

eth0 is not recognised at startup. ifconfig eth0 up activates it.

It now seems hit and miss whether I have internet access at the moment no go no matter how I configure things in netconfig. I can ping my router whether I have configured with a static IP or as dhcp, it just won't give me access but happily lets suse. Both systems appear to be set up the same although suse has a static ip and a dhcp server running. I've no idea how to set up a dhcp server in slack and now wonder if this is the problem for both rhyshypnotic and I.

Any suggestions?

Check in /etc/rd.d/rc.modules to see if your card in enabled?

Hi Ken

The card is listed in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.

How do I tell if its enabled?

Its strange. Last night no matter how I tried I could not get Internet access with slack whilst suse was fine.

Today suse has been running fine and I've just booted slack and I'm posting now using that.

arrragh,

its so frustrating.

I've noticed a number of questions around this issue elsewhere. Is it something with slack 10?

rhyshypnotic, how are you getting on? Better than me I hope.

Tell you what though, all this probing around is teaching me a few things, even got a little notebook to write down all the commands I'm learning!

Cheers everyone

If there is a hash (#) before it's listing in rc.modules you can remove it (the #) and try again. (sorry if you already knew that.)

Do you have the info for your eth0 in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf ?

I've altered nothing since my last post. I've just booted up and everythings fine in my slack world!

I know that some network settings require a re-boot and I had been doing that. There are some things that still mystify me about this 'vodoo' art. There are times that I look at all the settings and configure the text files just like the books tell me, everything looks right....and it does not work.....then later I go back to it...and its working....its like a petulant child..'I'll do it in my own good time'

Right, network and internet is working.. no more messing....I'm just going to try and configure..........
