Network problems

Hello, im new to linux all together not just to slackware 9.0. I installed it and it boots fine and i even configured my network using netconfig. All was working fine with me being able to access the internet and everything. Now, all of a sudden i can't access the internet or the rest of my network. Since i am new to linux i don't know how to address this problem. I ran ifconfig at the command and my IP that i specified is still there. Im not using DHCP and its not a problem with my ISP because i can still access the internet and the network with my other computeres which are a windows machine and a macintosh machine. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Can you ping any of the other machines you have? Of even your default gateway/router? At bootime are there any error messages reported to you? Unfortunately you won't see error messages in the output from dmesg so you'll need to boot the machine (onto the command line, hopefully you're not starting straight into X) don't log in just use shift+PageUp to scroll back up the screen to see the messages.

cheers

Jamie...

The description sounds like you are running a router that is providing the internet connection and your local network hub. Please check your cable and link lights, etc. Even try perhaps another port on the router. Don't just reboot the computer, shutdown and power off/on to completely reset the NIC card if required. Your problem sounds like a hardware problem if the IP configuration is OK.

Yes, i am using a linksys 4-port cable router on my network. I can't ping any other machine or access the internet but the other machines can.

I haven't tried shutting my machine off completely i just have been restarting so ill give that a try. Thanks!

Sounds like you have your Slackware PC hooked into the uplink port. There's always a port on a hub that shares the uplink feature. Make sure you're not hooked into that one. It's gotten me a few times.

Can you ping your own IP address? Maybe power off/on the router? Try a port that you know is working from one of the other machines or use one of the other machines to verify the port you are using. If you are sure about the config then probably the NIC card has failed. Try a different one if available.

kylerebbe, you might want to consider starting your own thread if you require assistance. These threads can get long and difficult to read if more than one operation and user is attempted at the same time. Every post has to be verified as to who is posting and what their equipment and problem is.

I suggest using netconfig and select DHCP to see if that works with your router.

Ughh...i just want to pull all my hair out. I tried those suggestions you just gave me and everything is working fine. The nic card is ok too cause i put my windows 2000 server hd back in and it boots and accesses the network. Also, i tried accessing my router config from linux konquerer and netscape and it says "the connection was refused when attempting to connect to 192.168.1.1" . So that right there tells me that its all working but for some reason linux is being refused by my router. WHy? Is that what it sounds like to you?

All your help is very much appreciated!

ok, my linux machine is 192.168.1.100, the netmask is 255.255.255.0, the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 and my dns is 65.32.1.70 but that means nothing only to my ISP.

Perhaps review the /var/log/messages, syslog, debug files and see if anything is there being reported. Have you made any changes to your config since the last time it worked? Kernel upgrade or other packages?
