Network manager for slackware?

Hi A while ago I read a thread on good gui networkmanagers but now I can't seem to find it. I know there are problems installing knetworkmanager. Could someone suggest a good working network manager gui?

Thanks

Hi okos,

I will admit for my laptop, slackware 12.1 and xfce I felt the lack of a gui network manager quite badly. Particularly when 'on the road' I did not want to be messing around with /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf every time I came upon a wireless hotspot or plugged into a strange wired network.

This showed me 2 shortcomings:
  1. My own lack of skills in utilising the slackware networking tools while on the road. These tools are more than adequate for this but perhaps I am a little lazy?
  2. The lack of a decent graphical network manager shipped with xfce: understandable as xfce by its nature is a little minimal.

I cannot answer for kde as I am not a big fan and I was not willing to use kde programs while running xfce but certainly the answer for me was wicd and specifically the slackbuild script put together by Rob Workman on slackbuilds.org:

http://slackbuilds.org/repository/12.1/network/wicd/

Thanks rob for this :-). wicd has operated 100% flawlessly on this laptop and been the last small hurdle in running 12.1 well on a Latitude D520 with a Broadcom 4312 (rev 01) wireless chip.

That was the long answer. The short answer: wicd.

I use Wireless Assistant for my network needs. It runs on KDE and has a nice and easy GUI. Just download the Slack package and run "installpkg wlassitant-0.5.7-i386-1.tgz" in konsole. You then can run wlassistant from Konsole or go to the internet option in the K menu. You can find it here:

Wicd is indeed a good choice, and until the newer version gets pushed public at SlackBuilds.org, consider getting it from my personal repository.

Thanks guys

I went with the wicd. Already downloaded and installed from your slack build site.

Thanks a bunch.

The Wicd devs are working on a cli client for it too, in case anyone's interested. You'll have to build the svn trunk (it's 1.5.x ++ code), and the wicd-cli is a branch in the svn checkout.
I've not actually messed with it too much yet, but I think it's functional right now...

Thanks for your wicd package, it's really a very usefull tool! :-)
It would be nice if it had a Qt/KDE interface. Maybe I should just make one, if I have time...

KDE4 makes it look qt-ish, if that helps :)

As of 12.2, wicd is now included in Slackware. You can find it in the /extra directory on any Slackware mirror.
