Hi I want to set up my own LAN server within 8 workstations.I'm not sure what do I have to do first. How to provide Internet access to every each of them, using Mac Addresses for authorization(if possible).
Thanks for any advice.

Are you looking at a wireless solution? Wired? By restricting Mac Addresses, I'm assuming wireless.
The first step is to purchase a Wireless Router -- most all have the ability to filter by MAC address. You would also need wireless cards for each of the terminals. As you can see, a wired solution is cheaper, but more restrictive.

I run a wired network with 12 computers and I use FREESCO on a very cheap pc to keep the packets flowing. This was much cheaper than buying a router. You may want to check them out.. http://www.freesco.org/
If you're looking to run a wireless network, note that mac address filtering is generally very easy to get around. You'll need something like WPA if security is of the slightest concern.
Cheers,
Jacob

Hi,
One point of concern would be security! The wireless will be open to break in. Even with WEP or WAP and MAC filtering the system can be accessed with the right tools. Therefore the wired would be the most secured network. If your data or network must be secured then wired is the best choice.
As for reference information, check my sig. Several good reads!
