Network issue. Not always working still not sure what is the problem.

When I boot sometimes I have eth0 interface many times only lo.
I tried the following without success:
Quote:

/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 restart
/etc/rc.d/rc.dhcpcd restart
dhcpcd -k
dhcpcd restart
When I have only lo, ifconfig -a still does not show the eth0 interface.

Ive been working on this problem ever since I installed slack 12.1. I first thought it was a problem with vmware which I installed shortly after slack 12.1. Vmware has its own dhcp client.
I removed vmware and the problem persisted.

I decided to copy my dmesg > working.txt when it booted with eth0 interface and copy my dmesg> notworking.txt when I had no interfaces other then the loop back interface (lo). I then used the diff command to show the differences.
I use the b44 driver for the lan connection. That is what I am interested in getting to work. I also have the bcm43 or b43 driver is for the wireless which I do not use. I have not interest in getting the bcm43xx to work.
For those of you who are not familiar with the diff command I suggest to read this link before posting a reply.

The file working.txt is the output of the dmesg when I have the eth0 interface.
The file notworking.txt is the dmesg when I only have loop back interface.

Here is the difference between the two dmesg outputs using the diff command:

Any suggestions?

One other thing, I have only one processor and yet the dmesg above states 2 processors. Why.

Ive had slackware 12 on this Dell inspiron 5150 for over a year without incident before. It was not until after I installed 12.1 did the problem exist.

Hi,

When posting long lists of code/data please use the '#' vbcode tag. That way the window will be smaller and a scroll bar available. We can read the data with the scroll bar. Makes reading a lot easier.

Post the output for 'lsmod', 'lspci -v', '/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf', ifconfig -a and 'route -n'. Post the 'dmesg' as a whole so we can see the information. I really don't care about the 'diff', since we are attempting to diagnose a single problem with the 'eth' device on one boot.

BTW, which kernel are you using for 12.1?

# This file contains the configuration settings for network interfaces.
# If USE_DHCP[interface] is set to "yes", this overrides any other settings.
# If you don't have an interface, leave the settings null ("").

# You can configure network interfaces other than eth0,eth1... by setting
# IFNAME[interface] to the interface's name. If IFNAME[interface] is unset
# or empty, it is assumed you're configuring eth<interface>.

# Several other parameters are available, the end of this file contains a

Do you want the dmesg for when I can't get a network interface?

Thanks for the help onebuck.
If you find a solution, please let me know how you found it and how I can fix it.

Hi,

Yes, provide the output for all within a session that you don't have the eth0 device. What are you doing to get the eth device to work in another session? Booting with another kernel? Booting with another version? What?

The beginning of the dmesg is the same as the beginning of the first dmesg. I once again cut it out reduce characters when posting.

I am only using the original slack 12.1-smp kernel.
What happens is when I boot sometimes I have network interface and sometimes not. :(

For some reason, your b44 driver loads are throwing fits:

Code:

> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_device_is_enabled
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_pcicore_dev_irqvecs_enable
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_bus_may_powerdown
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_pcihost_register
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_dma_set_mask
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_device_enable
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_driver_unregister
> b44: Unknown symbol __ssb_driver_register
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_bus_powerup
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_clockspeed
> b44: Unknown symbol ssb_dma_translation

This output is coming from the b44 Ethernet driver load, and the loader is unable to resolve symbols.

Hi,

This looks like the huge-smp kernel is being used.
Code:

Excerpt from CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT;
As stated earlier, it is recommended that you use one of the generic kernels
rather than the huge kernels; the huge kernels are primarily intended as
"installer" and "emergency" kernels in case you forget to make an initrd.
For most systems, you should use the generic SMP kernel if it will run,
even if your system is not SMP-capable.  Some newer hardware needs the
local APIC enabled in the SMP kernel, and theoretically there should not be
a performance penalty with using the SMP-capable kernel on a uniprocessor
machine, as the SMP kernel tests for this and makes necessary adjustments.
Furthermore, the kernel sources shipped with Slackware are configured for
SMP usage, so you won't have to modify those to build external modules
(such as NVidia or ATI proprietary drivers) if you use the SMP kernel.

I would try too use the generic-smp kernel first then the generic.

Thanks, Ill keep you up to date.

I am working on compiling a new kernel without the smp settings.
This will be the second time I compiled a kernel since learning linux about a year and a half ago. :)

Maybe this will fix the problem.

just a tip when your recompiliing your kernel, you seem to have a pentium4 processor which may have hyperthreading enables in which case you do have 2 virtual cores - thats more or less what hyperthreading does, be sure to enable smp and hyperthreading in your kernel otherwise you won't get to use both cores - you can check if you do have 2 virtual cpus or cores by checking /cat/proc/cpuinfo to see if there are two processors listed.

That is what shows when I fail to get a network interface.

Im thinking that maybe the whole cause of the problem is that my computer thinks it has dual core when it does not. I did not have the problem with slack 12 when I used the smp kernel. I don't recall reading in the dmesg for slack 12 "dual core" or something of that matter.

So, I think, not that I'm an expert, that it is maybe best not to include smp settings in the compiled kernel. I just compiled a new kernel and so far I have a network interface. :D.
