Network install of slackware
 

I would like to install slackware on my other computer but it is almost just a shell.All I really have is a usb key (256) and a floppy drive.I can boot the system with slax from the usb key but would like to install slackware onto the empty hardrive.How could I go about doing this?

I've seen this question a lot and I wonder if there is something you can install on two machines to be able to transfer stuff HD to HD.

If you don't have a network or CD drive on that other PC, and all it has is USB, it will take a while to get everything on it, but your 256M key is actually big enough to load a lot of Slackware.

What you might do is to create an ext2 partition on your USB drive and install a base Slackware setup on it. Then boot from it on the small PC and use it like a live CD, to fdisk your HD, set up partitions, mkswap and reiserfs, edit the fstab and lilo, etc. Then you can copy everything from the USB drive onto the HD. Then delete everything on the USB drive and just start copying packages from your big machine to your small machine, whatever you want. This really shouldn't take too long to do.

If you have network on the small PC, after you install your base system you could download packages from Slackware.com instead of copying stuff on the USB drive but it may be faster just to bundle stuff on the USB drive.

the thread is called "Network install of slackware" if you are looking to do a network install just create the boot floppys and during the setup select nfs install put the cd in the other computer and share it out via nfs ... and proceed with the setup as normal.

Also, check your /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs/Thinclient-HOWTO, it tells how to boot/run from the network. You can dl a copy from here

While PXE booting the Slackware installer would be a neat trick, it seems needlessly complicated and difficult.

Especially if the computer he is trying to pull the NFS share from is a Windows machine (it is already trouble enough getting Services for Unix working properly on Windows for the NFS server).
