I was trying to find out from where can I see the properties of the running network (LAN) and how could I have an icon of the established connection on the main panel but I couldn't fine anything. Any ideas please?

the nearest thing I can think of is gkrellm. It can monitor all manner of system properties, and there is a Slackware version in the /slackware/xap/ dir on your disk or the mirrors.
