Rather than start a new thread this is the exact problem I'm having with a fresh install of Slack 10.2. I have never had a problem with the network card working under other Distributions.
My NIC is a "Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-BO 100 Base-TX (rev 02)"
Like I said I've never had a problem with this working out of the box. Now that its not working I don't know how to make it work with no network connection. Is there some way to get this card working with what I have available in the kernel or am I going to have to download the driver from Broadcom and burn the 617k file to a CD to get it to the laptop?
Thanks for any and all help...I'll keep searching for an answer as well.
in dmesg I don't see anything relating to b44. I did a full install of the most recent 10.2 slackware ISO's and it just doesn't load the drivers for my network card. Broadcom's web site states that the drivers should be included in the 2.4.x kernel, which is being loaded with this install.
When I excecute the "lspci" command, I do however see 2 different lines referencing Broadcom....
*Ethernet Controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-Bo 100Base-TX (rev 02)
*Network Controller: Broadcom Corporation: Unknown Device 4311 (rev 01)
So it appears as if the kernel is loading the Eth Controller, but not the Network controller. I just found another thread that a person with the same card had no problems once he rolled back to the 10.0 release. I'm going to go ahead and try that and see what it gets me here initially.
I'm not very experienced in Linux, and I am trying to install this on a Dell Laptop for school (I know, no the best first testbed for Linux). I'm confident with lots of reading and all the wonderful people here on LQ I'll manage to work it out. All of my programming coursework and most of my engineering coursework is done on the Linux platform, so I need to get this functioning so taht I can take my homework home with me .
Well the 10.0 installation didn't seem to load the b44 module either. I'm not sure why not; from what I read everywhere this network card should be working out of the box. It worked right off the bat with Fedora C5, but that was on the 2.6 kernel, not 2.4.
Anyway if anyone has any guidance post up, I'm gonna go to bed for the night and pick this back up in the morning.
hi frnds
having same problem as anru is having
plz help me out .same ethernet controller same prob on my inspiron 1520 help me out
You did look at the date on the original post. It would benefit you to start a new thread with your problem. You should include all relative information to your problem. Distribution release, kernel you are using, system information, error messages. What you have done to correct the problem?
