Need to delete a crapload of files
Hi guys,
I have a full installation of Slackware 10.1, and now my harddrive is also full.
Basically I want to know if there is a bunch of files that I can delete right away.
For example if I possibly have the sources for every installed program lying around (that came with the distro), or archives that I can find on the cds.. Those could all go away.
I'm using this installation for development, and there's a lot of data I need space for.
Hopefully there is a quick way of getting a few hundred megs back quickly, not looking for removing a hundred 4mb apps
[EDIT]
I saw KPackage after seeing an uninstall-thread. I'll do some cleaning there, hopefully there are some other big things to do.
Thank you,
Camino

Check the packages installed from the Package Manager and unistall those you don't need.

The "full install" option is actually a somewhat ridiculous one. Noone wants both all of emacs, vim, joe and jed at the same time.

If the /temp directory isn't in it's own partition, that's an easy place to clean out. Also, you may have a large number of old logs in /var/logs. The one's ending in .gz.

Make sure you don't uninstall applications needed by KDE itself.
You have the ability of ruining your system, when having root privileges, remember?

check the size of your syslog and other log files.
slackware package managers (swaret, slackpkg) tend to cache loads of stuff. i believe you can purge these removed packages.

Also, check /usr/src and look if there's something in there that you don't need.

Full install -- quite a bit there you won't need (as in the aforementioned text editors, outdated versions of FireFox, Thunderbird, and Mozilla, every WM (IceWM, Fluxbox, Blackbox, Gnome, et cetera), and much much more)!
I believe I've only done a 'full' install once, after then it was always custom

Please tell us how.
Have a habit of sharing stuff when you feel like closing a topic.
It may help others too, having the same problem.

I'm sorry Duffy,
it's obvious that I should do this. Allthough in this case I thought it was too trivial to make a difference (when following the advice of those who posted).
Anyway, I removed a bunch of packages as well as deleted logfiles (they were horribly big!).
regards,
Camino

useful note from UPGRADE.TXT
Quote:
9. Remove KDE language bloat. By upgrading all packages using
--install-new you've probably installed all of the KDE language
translations from the KDEI series, which will use up about
500MB. If you need only US English, you may remove the KDE
language packs like this:
cd /var/log/packages
removepkg kde-i18n* koffice-i18n*
Even if you need one of these, it might be best to start by
removing them all, and then go back and install the ones you
need with installpkg.

If your logfiles are huge, then you are probably missing `logrotate' ;-)

You can safly remove all the desktop managers your not using
and the mutilmedia packages that don't worl as a fact of this matter
you can replace all of the mutilmedia that came with the distro with mplayer
