Need quick help with HandBrakeCLI / K3b

I am leaving on a short trip in a few hours and wanted to copy a DVD to take with me instead of the original. It is a commercially produced DVD that plays well on my new Slackware64 system.

But I am having no luck getting a copy made with either K3b or HandBrakeCLI, and am running short on time. My problems probably stem from my general unfamiliarity with media apps and encodings, so thought I'd ask for any quick pointers anyone here can offer.

I have read many threads here the last couple of days and am aware of problems with ffmpeg and transcode, but have followed the info found for that.

When I try to copy with K3b I get a transcode '127' error which makes me think my ffmpeg/transcode are not working correctly.

Originally I built the SBo ffmpeg but have changed to Eric's prebuilt package - still the same error.

I also built HandBrakeCLI from SBO - but I am mostly clueless how to use it.

I have a newly installed Slackware64-14 and have libdvdcss and "all" the other codecs. Everything built and installed without error...

If someone could give me some quick safe defaults for HandBrake I think that would be the my fastest solution - but open to any suggestions.

BTW - it is a 7GB DVD so I would like to shrink it in the process...

Thanks

I use Eric's Handbreak from restricted mirror and it just eats everything I throw at it.
From the gui;
Select Source in the upper left hand corner and navigate to the disc in the panel.
Click on the disc and then select VIDEO_TS from the window.
Click OK.
It will start to scan the disc.
When it's done scanning, you can add subtitles by selecting the subtitles tab and add whatever subtitles you want.
When your done just hit the green Start button at upper left.

edit:
I also have K3b with lidvdcss & transcode, K9copy and Brasero from SlackBuilds. All of them work well most of the time.
HandBreak works for me all on the time.

Thanks - building now...

Copying now!

K9copy is new to me but that made it simple! Thanks TobiSGD!

OK - I have my DVD ready to travel - Thanks much TobiSGD!

And thanks slackass - I have installed the HandBrakeCLI but not the GUI version, but would like to educate myself enough to use them. I have been reading threads here, the HandBrake web site and many other things and am a little confused by it all.

Admittedly, I am not well versed in the various encodings and how they relate to a specific project's goals - but will be soon I hope.

My immediate problem was solved exceedingly well by K9Copy, so I am going to mark this thread solved. But I would still like to get a better handle on HandBrakeCLI and to understand why ffmpeg/transcode are not working with k3b - and how to fix that, so any additional comments still welcomed!

I used nothing but K9copy for several years but the developer gave up on it. That’s what made me jump ship to HandBrake. Recently Roberto Neri was kind enough to to make a slackbuild for it but I think eventually we may have to do without K9copy.

He's bitching because he got e-mails asking for it for Gnome? He's also bitching because it's not in a package that works for every distro on the planet!? I guess the term 'diversity in an OS' was a real mind boggler for him. All he had to do was make it a source tarball and let others do the work of making it a package for other distro's. He needs to work for M$...they've got the same Borg mentality as this guy - make it all one. Do not look, act, or feel like anything else but the one!

With that attitude he has, it *needed* to be forgotten about and he *needed* to leave the linux world.

astrogeek,

Another thing that we want to try is dvdstyler. I use HandBrake to make mp4 out of my DVDs or from ts files created from my tv tuner. I then use dvdstyler to create a travel DVD for the kids. Has been working great!
