Need help with basic setup

I have a few questions about setting my system up, upon boot.

1.) I am auto mounting my floppy and CD rom drives sucessfully. If after the drives are mounted and I copy a new file to the floppy device, how can I get refreshed view of the files on the Floppy? Wont doing a ls -l /mnt/floppy just show me the files on the floopy found at boot time mounting?

2.) I need my system to boot directly to KDE upon startup. In order to do this I edited the inittab file to give it a run level of 5 to boot to KDE. But when I rebooted, the system brought me back to the standard control prompt/consol screen.

3.) I am trying to adjust my whole screen position and resolution. My whole screen seems to be shifted slightly to the left, cutting off some things. I need it to be moved slightly to the right. Is there a way to do this without actually pressing the buttons on the monitor?

4.) How do I change the resolution of the screen to 800x600?

5.) I would like to find out the v-sync and h-sync of my monitor, but I am not sure what there values are. They are not in my manul that came with the monitor. All I was able to find out was the refresh rate(60HZ). Is there a way to find this info?

6.) I am trying to execute the XF86Setup command from the console and I keep getting "command not found". I am logged in as root and I have installed all the packages during the install.

Thanks for your help.

For most of that, go into /etc/X11/XF86Config , and edit it.

That has your resolution. You should see a section like "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480".... (numbers may be different). There should be one for each color depth (8,16,24). This is the default resolution order. Just change the first resolution to whatever you want the res to be.

I dont think you can boot strait into KDE. You have to log on. You shouldnt set your runlevel to 5 either, set it to 4. This will let you have a graphical login screen, that will let you go strait into KDE once you log in.

You V-Sync IS your refresh rate, and you need to find your H-Sync from the manual, or google around.

Remember, your refresh rate changes based on your resolution (higher the resolution, lower the refresh rate), and your XF86Config file allows you to have ranges for H/V -sync. So try like 40-80 for H-Sync and 60-80 for your V-Sync, and it should work itself out.

I have never heard of the XF86Setup command. Its XF86Config.

A couple of confusing things...

1.) WHen I try 4 as the run level I get the graphical logon like you said, but it takes me to GNOME. I have set my default windows manager to be KDE, so I don't understand why it is taking me to GNOME. WHen I type startx it takes me to KDE. I don't know what is going on.

2.) I am trying to use the SuperProbe command to find info on my video card, but the command does not seem to exist on my system. I keep getting command not found.
